The Othering & Belonging Institute (the Institute) brings together researchers, stakeholders, policymakers, and communicators to identify and challenge the barriers to an inclusive, just, and sustainable society and to create transformative change. The Institute serves as a national hub of a vibrant network of researchers and community partners, and, as such, plays a leadership role in translating, communicating, and facilitating research, policy, and strategic engagement for societal good. The Institute advances research and policy related to marginalized groups and social cleavages including disability, LGBTQI citizenship, race, religion, economics, public health, education, democracy and the new emerging research on global north/global south relations. The Institute represents a tremendous opportunity to bring leading researchers and substantial resources across disciplines to bear on society's pressing and pivotal issues related to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
The Arts and Cultural Strategist will help develop and implement an integrated cultural strategy for the Institute, with an emphasis on community-engagement, strategic communication and narrative, and leadership development, partnership building, and training with artists and community-based organizations. The Arts and Cultural strategist will implement work that helps expand our audiences, increase the visibility of the Institute's identity and name, and helps in the dissemination of our messages, frames, concepts, and research.
This position will take direction from the Institute Communications Director in coordination with other program leads whose work plans include cultural strategy. This position will also be expected to support ongoing efforts and coordinate the development of cultural strategy that is in alignment with the Institute's frameworks and analyses around inclusion and exclusion.
Primary components of the role will be:
- Design and coordinate projects that engage artists and other community members in cultural production that advance the Institute's mission and bolster its audiences, brand, and dissemination.
- Collaborate with Institute staff to develop and implement cultural strategies integrated with research, communications, strategic narrative, curricula and other strategies.
- Facilitate trainings and planning sessions internally and externally on topics related to arts and cultural strategy.
Capacity-building and implementation.
- Working deeply with Institute program and communications staff, help design, expand, and implement the Institute's work related to arts and cultural strategy. Develop principles, best practices, and an Institute definition of arts and cultural strategy and integration anchored and tailored to the Institute's frameworks. Support the application of those across the Institute. Help build internal capacity and infrastructure to support the sustainable integration of arts and cultural strategy. Perform tasks and take responsibility to execute the work that expands the capacity-building strategy.
Program integration of cultural strategy.
- Collaborate with Institute leadership, program directors, and other staff across the Institute to design and implement strategies and activities that use an artistic and cultural input and framing.
- Support and expand the Institute's frameworks by bringing the voices and insights from community-engaged processes into institute work more broadly. Play a leading role on the integration of cultural strategy in community-engaged projects and public event programming. Design and coordinate fellowship programs with community-based organizations and artists to engage them in creative arts as a participatory process to advance belonging.
Public Education. Training / Resources / Materials.
- Develop, create, and refinement of written strategies as relates to cultural strategy, work as thought partner with communications, program, and leadership to
Institute liaison and representative.
- Artist in residence liaison. Serving on campus, local, and national networks. Speak on behalf of the Institute in matters related to arts and cultural integration; provide input to the director and leadership on arts and cultural strategy for speaking engagements and media.
- Use established project and Institute systems for tracking project activities, such as creating action plans and reports. Contribute to fundraising reports on arts and cultural strategy work. Participating in staff meetings and other organizational efforts that call on the entire staff for support such as the O&B conference.

- Experience with pedagogy and facilitation strategies for capacity-building.
- Knowledge of socially-engaged artist practices.
- Experience fostering partnerships with groups based in marginalized communities and developing principles collaborations involving cultural strategy.
- An understanding of the arts and cultural strategy landscape as it relates to community power-building.
- Research skills to integrate artistic and cultural practices as part of programmatic work.
- Ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders, peer advocacy groups, government entities, community leaders as the grounding of future partnerships.
- Experience crafting training and learning materials on related topics.
- Ability to conceive, produce and execute events, including agenda development, outreach, and logistical planning.
- Knowledge of practices and procedures associated with community organizing and social justice strategies.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated project management skills.
- Knowledge of the Institute, as well as the University of California, Berkeley, including the vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements, issues of concern and infrastructure or the ability to learn.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes and to respond appropriately to rapidly changing deadlines.
- Ability to travel domestically, as well as staff events outside normal working hours.
- Flexible, self-motivated; ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Capable of supervising student assistants and as needed.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and political acumen.
- Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
- Bachelor's degree in a related area required and/or an equivalent combination of education/experience.
Salary & Benefits
The annual salary range of the position is $60,800 - $72,000, commensurate with experience.
