Position Summary

The University at Buffalo seeks a Laboratory Safety Manager who can perform a wide variety of duties for Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Department.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Coordinate the lab safety programs and lab safety training activities for various Academic Departments with research laboratories.
    • Assist senior management, principal investigators, lab workers and graduate and undergraduate students on various health & safety related issues related to laboratory operations, teaching labs and lab research.
    • Actively identify areas of risk and work towards their resolution. Provide oversight of the EH&S laboratory safety program, providing regular site visits to the labs and reports and feedback related to observations and findings.
    • Act as liaison to the research labs relative to conformance with policies and procedures, development of standard operating procedures and other responsibilities related to compliance with applicable regulations and recognized standards.
    • Respond to requests for information, questions or assistance from research personnel on health and safety-related issues, equipment and training.
    • Provide response for emergency problems.
    • Attend faculty meetings to implement lab health and safety initiatives.
    • May serve as the University’s designated Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) under the requirements of the OSHA laboratory standard.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in scientific discipline (Chemistry, other Science, Environmental Science or Public Health or closely related field).
  • Demonstrated experience (three years or greater) in conducting laboratory safety inspections.
  • Working knowledge of chemicals and chemical toxicity.
  • Excellent customer service skills and strong interpersonal communications skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A strong background in the chemistry of hazardous materials including a working knowledge of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience in an academic and/or research environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing safety and health training with the intent to reduce risk.
  • Experience in supervising staff

Physical Demands

    • Must be medically cleared each year to wear a respirator and pass an annual medical physical and be successfully fit-tested in a full-face air purifying respirator.
    • Must be able to lift 20 lbs.
