The intellectual heart of UC Berkeley, the College of Letters & Science (L&S) is the largest of the university's 14 colleges and schools and the most prestigious teaching and research unit in the UC system. Responsibilities
  • Provides advice on complex non-senate academic personnel matters to department AP staff, Managers, Chairs, Directors, and Deans, and recommends strategies for addressing sensitive situations involving academic appointees and/or requesting exceptions to policy.
  • Analyze AP problems, gather background information, and recommend solutions to Deans and Associate Deans, regarding unusual situations that affect the faculty.
  • Identifies and utilizes precedent-setting situations to recommend new organizational procedures and practices.
  • Functions as technical lead and expert resource to other Academic Personnel professionals, advising and coordinating processes and procedures more than 20 departments and centers; may include acting as advisor to other Academic HR specialists, or serving as lead within a department.
  • Prepares and maintains college-wide training materials and works collaboratively with departments and Berkeley Regional Service center staff to streamline processes.
  • Conducts investigations into complaints involving academic appointees; provides feedback to management and makes strategic recommendations.
  • Represents campus in informal and formal complaint resolution processes.
  • Administers academic personnel actions for non-senate faculty and research titles. Actions include, but are not limited to recruitment, appointment, advancement, compensation, faculty welfare programs, and faculty equity. Titles include, but are not limited to lecturers, postdocs, academic administrators, researchers, and visiting/adjunct faculty.
  • Backs up other AP Analysts in the college as necessary, and performs other miscellaneous HR tasks under the direction of the HR Director.
  • Evaluates departmental requests for temporary academic staff and makes recommendations to deans and associate deans.
  • Reviews departmental TAS proposals and advises deans and associate deans and assistant deans on the deployment of resources for temporary academic staffing.


Required Qualifications
  • Requires advanced knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret system wide, campus and college policies and procedures with govern academic HR.
  • Excellent critical and innovative thinking to address complex issues and present nuanced analyses.
  • Strong service orientation, attention to detail, and ability to follow-up on issues.
  • Excellent skills to communicate diplomatically with all levels of the community both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work with demanding time-frames.


Ability to use high-level discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to analyze issues; develop project scope and solutions, give professional advice to senior officials and make critical decisions regarding personnel matters.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical and computer skills to create reports, conduct analysis and develop recommendations.
  • Political acumen and sensitivities to the differing perspectives and political circumstances within all levels of the Campus as well as external constituencies.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn university enterprise systems, (I.E. UCPath, AP Recruit, CalTime) and/or similar business software programs and systems or equivalent knowledge.


Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
