As a national collegiate leader, UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) provides comprehensive medical, mental health, insurance and health promotion services to all Berkeley students, and a variety of health programs for faculty and staff. Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Services are designed to minimize the impact of illness, emotional distress and injury on studies and work. University Health Services (UHS) is looking for a licensed psychologist to work with a team of talented professionals in their Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) unit, and who share a passion for providing exceptional and comprehensive psychological and counseling services to university students. CPS is a highly utilized, comprehensive, student counseling service that assists students with a wide range of concerns, including academic success, life management, career and life planning, crisis management, and emotional and psychiatric illness. Performing under the general supervision of the Director of CPS, CPS staff provides a variety of services for students including career assessment and counseling, brief psychotherapy, crisis assessment and intervention, couples counseling, group counseling, and case management for complex medical and psychiatric illnesses. Counseling staff also offer psycho-educational programs to students and provide consultation to faculty and staff regarding student concerns. Counselors are a multicultural group of social workers and clinical and counseling psychologists. CPS also has an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited pre-doctoral internship training program. UHS, located at the Tang Center, serves the University of California, Berkeley campus by providing fully accredited primary and urgent medical care, sports medicine, mental health, innovative health promotion and health insurance services to students, as well as a variety of faculty and staff health programs and services. Responsibilities

  • Performs diagnosis and psychotherapy on a full range of cases that are not pre-screened.
  • Professionally responsible for the soundness and validity of recommendations and services, but is expected to seek advice from senior specialists on unusual or uniquely complex client responses or on problems outside their area of expertise.
  • Gathers, analyzes, prepares, summarizes and monitors the status and progress of individual cases and projects and may participate in the training of lower-level professionals and paraprofessionals.
  • Implements related business processes.
  • Functions as a resource and may provide clinical guidance and oversight to lower level professional staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with providing time-limited counseling and psychotherapy, group counseling, evaluation, diagnosis and crisis intervention services.
  • Knowledge and experience with student development and career counseling/ assessment.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, standards and ethics of professional conduct.
  • Thorough knowledge of diagnostic/psychological testing methodologies.
  • Prior counseling experience in working with multicultural undergraduate and graduate student populations.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including public speaking and workshop delivery.
  • Thorough skills associated with conducting complex diagnosis, problem-solving and critical-thinking.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with diverse client group, members of the medical staff and faculty.
  • Ability to conduct complex analysis and develop and present recommendations and course of treatment.
  • Knowledge of electronic/medical records systems.
  • Doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology and current, valid license in California.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience providing services to underrepresented student populations.
