Departmental Overview


UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. Extension offers more than 2,000 courses per year in a variety of subjects both online and in the classroom. Extension's administrative departments and units include student records (transcripts), registration, scheduling, international student services, facilities, financial services, and the cashier's office. In addition to the main Berkeley center, it has responsibility for the maintenance and operation of regional centers in San Francisco (Spear Street), and Belmont and other leased facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Responsibilities


Student Services and Advising:
  • Provides advising and information to international students and the community regarding campus policies, safety and conduct; housing, health insurance, cultural adjustments, financial matters, program availability and selections, etc.
  • Provides excellent customer service to students, agents and the community via telephone, walk-in, and email. Interfaces and collaborates effectively with program staff, campus representatives, instructors/professor to address and resolve student issues.
  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for UC Berkeley Extension and assures compliance with DHS rules and regulations.
  • Advises students on their federal, state and local requirements to maintaining their status in the U.S.
  • Works with SEVIS and internal database to issue I-20s, process Registration, address updates, student requests for employment, etc in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with academic departments to verify full-time enrollment in program.
  • Monitors SEVIS alerts and communicates with students as required.
  • Attends international student advising meetings such as DSO BAY-PIER meetings and NAFSA conferences to keep current regarding latest immigration updates.
  • Processes international admissions applications, enrollments, payments, and I-20s for multiple international student programs, such as Diploma Program, Global Access Program, Evening Certificate Program and the Concurrent Enrollment Program.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with academic units, students, and international representatives regarding the admission process.


Data & Reporting:
  • Prepares and creates a variety of statistical reports to present data and trends in enrollment, academic progress, finances, and recruitment to internal and external stakeholders.


Student Orientation & Events:
  • Assists in organization and coordination of student orientations, information sessions, departmental program support activities, and special events.
  • Creates, reviews and delivers presentations/webinars at orientation, workshops and information sessions.
  • Coordinates and implements non-complex student events and assists in the planning and implementation of complex events.
  • May occasionally plan and lead individuals or groups to tour site locations and describe points of interest.


Required Qualifications


  • Ability to serve as a Designated School Official (DSO).
  • Previous experience working with an international student population.
  • Experience advising international students on DHS/DOS rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge and skills in advising, counseling, active listening and critical thinking.
  • Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of University processes and procedures.
  • Ability to multi-task, verbal communication, written communication, organization.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of student data systems
  • Accuracy with data entry and maintaining student information
  • Working knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) in regards to F-1, B-1/B-2, WT/WB and J-1/J-2 visas.
  • Working knowledge and experience as a DSO in processing nonimmigrant visa documents and fulfilling SEVIS (Student Exchange Visitor Information System) reporting requirements set by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.


Education/Training:
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Salary & Benefits


This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
