The Department of Statistics is an academic department in the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, College of Letters and Sciences. It includes approximately 30 active faculty and emeriti and 10 career employees. The number of Statistics undergraduate majors has grown from 84 to approximately 425 in less than 5 years. The department currently has 50 PhD students and 70 Professional Masters Degree Program students. Courses in the department annually enroll more than 8,000 students. This position is being created to accommodate the more than quadruple increase in student demand on the department's student services staff, particularly the demand on course enrollment that has doubled between 2014 and 2019.
This position is responsible for a wide range of duties in support of Statistics Student Services. Under the direction of the Student Services Manager the incumbent will provide assistance to the undergraduate and graduate advisors, the Chair, the MSO, faculty and students in curriculum planning, enrollment management, course scheduling, recruitment and admissions, student orientation and events, ASE/GSR appointments, and financial aid.
The position, under the direction of the Student Services Manager, will provide a professional with experience in general administration or a student services professional with moderate experience the opportunity to learn and/or increase their experience level in student services policies and procedures including enrollment management, scheduling, curriculum planning, admissions, etc.
Recruitment and Admissions:
- Assists with the undergraduate, PhD and Professional Masters Degree Program admissions process.
- Assists in the production and distribution of departmental materials related to the departmental programs.
- Uploads application materials and searches for test scores to assist in application completeness using the graduate admissions application management system (SLATE).
- Responds to general and moderately complex admissions inquiries.
- Assists with reviewing transcripts for degree eligibility.
- Assists with student recruitment visits each year.
- Prepares and sends admissions letters to accepted students.
Instructional and Curriculum Support:
- Responsible for enrollment management.
- Answers course enrollment questions for both majors and non-majors.
- Assists the Course & Curriculum Officer with on-line course evaluations, compiling enrollment data.
- Provides Academic Personnel Coordinator with evaluation data as needed for personnel cases.
- Assists with ASE assignments each semester, including application process, assigning Readers/Tutors to courses, checking eligibility, drafting and sending offer letters, and compiling and communicating student hire information to the HR Coordinator.
Course and Classroom Scheduling:
- Provides assistance with the management and scheduling of courses and special events.
- Surveys faculty to determine academic plans and teaching preferences.
- Tracks faculty course load and courses taught.
- Enters course information in classroom scheduling system (Campus Solutions).
- Assists or may be responsible for submitting and monitoring classroom space requests, and for communication with faculty and GSIs around need/preference.
- Coordinates office hours for instructors and GSIs.
- Assists with the submission of course proposals to the Academic Senate's Committee on Courses of Instruction.
- Assists with requests to obtain faculty approval for equivalency of non-Berkeley Statistics courses.
- Assists in the planning and execution of Student Services events including student recruitment visits, CAL DAY, and commencement.
- Helps to identify, communicate with and coordinate volunteers for Student Services events.
- Under the direction of the Graduate Advisors, assists with the processing and awarding of student fellowships, grants, and other awards.
Records Management/Special Projects:
- Enters student data into the department's tracking systems.
- Assists with the preparation and maintenance of student records.
- May monitor the submission of student grades.
- May perform email list maintenance, update Student Services website or other special projects for Student Services as assigned.
- Computer skills needed for word-processing, producing excel spreadsheets, updating websites, etc.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
- Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Demonstrated strong judgment, problem-solving skills and initiative are required.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to multi-task, strong organizational skills are required.
- Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality is required.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

This position is non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience within the range $21.56-$27.78.
