Departmental Overview

The Department of Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology (NST) focuses on the metabolic biology of nutrients and toxicants in relation to human health and disease.

Our research and curriculum span a breadth of topics, from the delivery of nutrients to mammalian cells and their molecular functions, through the influence of genetics on diet-associated human disease, to programs and policies that address human and environmental health and safety.


Director of Administration
  • Manages, plans and administers all administrative operations of the Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology department. Administrative operations include budgetary financial management, human resources (staff and academic personnel), IT, facilities and space planning, health and safety, emergency planning, department events, student services, and contracts and grants. Serves as the key administrative officer for department programs, oversees analysis and policy development for issues and processes.
  • Overall responsibility for department staffing and personnel management.
  • Addresses labor relations and employee relations issues. Coordinates and participates in a variety of human resources activities including employment, training, classification, and ensuring the completion of forms and documents related to HR and Payroll for unit/department
  • Coordinate outreach and communications with NST associated centers and Cooperative Extension.
  • Monitors and fields outside requests for information about Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology, its faculty, academic goals, and research interests.
  • Performs studies for resource plans, including approaches, trends, sources and uses.
  • Acts as chief liaison to Berkeley Regional Services to improve working relations and resolve workflow problems
  • Coordinates a variety of human resources-related activities including and ensuring the completion of forms and documents related to HR and Payroll for unit/department. Coordinates recruitments, hires, separations, etc./ in collaboration with the CNR Dean's Office and Berkeley Regional Services.
  • Develops and implements procedures for supply inventory and works with facilities to keep equipment in good working condition. Coordinates use of departmental resources, e.g., shared space and equipment.
  • Academic personnel activities in conjunction with analyst in the CNR Dean's Office, including the recruitment and retention of ladder rank faculty, appraisals, merits, promotions, adjunct faculty, professors in the graduate school, visiting professors, lecturers, specialists, and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Works with chair to coordinate departmental meetings and events as well as support for procedures related to academic appointments, merits, and promotions.
  • Works with the NST Dietetics Director on needs maintaining national accreditation for the Dietetics program. Supports the evolution and future state of the program.
  • Serves as unit resource to advise and facilitate faculty and student interface with the Dean's Office, Berkeley Regional Services and central administrative units to accomplish departmental goals.
  • Functions as the key facilities interface for the group working in collaboration with the CNR facilities team, campus and external facilities personnel to maintain and enhance building functionality.
  • Represents the department and serves on College and University committees.

Departmental Finance and Funding
  • Develops, projects and monitors departmental budget. Prepares budget and financial reports for funding which may be complex.
  • Monitor department discretionary funds. Analyze spend patterns and advise the Chair on appropriate spending. Anticipate income and provide monthly budget status. Review expenses to comply with any fund restrictions and university policy. Reviews expenses; monitors balances to prevent overdrafts.
  • Performs studies for resource plans, trends, sources and uses. Recommends and implements revenue generation programs.
  • Reviews funding opportunities from internal and extramural sources, and routes to appropriate faculty.
  • Ensures department is operating without deficits.
  • Coordinates with Student Services Advisor (SSA) on graduate student funding packages for upcoming fiscal year, using block grants, training grants, unit funds and faculty research funding.
  • Works with the Graduate and Undergraduate Advisors on funding for student awards.
  • Coordinates with Berkeley Regional Services Research Administration team to manage faculty contracts, grants and university funds.

Instructional Planning
  • Develops, implements and manages the department's fall, spring and summer teaching program. Prepares and monitors TAS budgets ensuring maximum enrollments that costs, including fee remissions, remain within the budget's constraints.
  • Oversees all aspects of Graduate student services including graduate admissions and student financial support.
  • Coordinates undergraduate affairs with Undergraduate Advisors and course scheduling staff in the CNR Office of Instruction and Student Affairs.
  • Collaborates with the Undergraduate Affairs Chair, Department Chair, Head Graduate Advisor, and other members of the faculty to complete the plans for the instructional program.

Managerial Leadership
  • Management and oversight of staff. Hires, trains, evaluates, supervises, and transforms staff through regular engagement and recognition.
  • Communicates the mission and direction of the department to staff, building necessary coalitions to affect change. Promotes administrative innovation, quality customer service and respect for diversity, teamwork, collaboration, and open communication.
  • Ensures that staff receive training in order to keep skills current and learn new systems as they are rolled out.
  • Approves all staff career development activities.

Public Information/Development
  • Design and maintain department website and communications
  • Oversees planning for development, alumni relations, and outreach activities in the department.
  • Takes lead on events and special programs planning and delivery, coordinates as needed with CNR College Relations office.
  • Coordinates with College Relations Office staff in CNR to support fundraising and alumni relations programs.

Special projects as directed by the Chair, e.g. researching comparable programs at other US universities to identify trends and develop a competitive advantage in recruiting a talented and diverse graduate student applicant pool.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge, or ability to learn, of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, account and fund management, personnel management.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees.
  • Knowledge of a variety of administrative operations activities such as events planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.
  • Knowledge, or ability to learn, of common University-specific computer application programs.
  • Interpersonal communication skills to include verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
  • Strong skills in short term planning, analysis and problem-solving and customer service.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
