Departmental Overview

IPSR is an international, interdisciplinary center for research on human thinking and feeling and how social forces conspire against and facilitate optimization of social processes. IPSR has active programs of research, scholarship, and training in four areas:

Racial Bias and Discrimination; Cognitive and emotional processes through which bias manifests; developmental and longitudinal aspects of bias acquisition and maintenance; interventions to reduce bias; health disparities.

Power and Status; Emotional, cognitive and behavioral mechanisms and outcomes associated with power and status; the difference between power and status; the link between hierarchy and decision making; the link between hierarchy and health outcomes; the role of hierarchy in interpersonal, organizational and intimate relationships.

Personality; Personality assessment in humans; personality development; implications of personality for performance, creativity, and innovation; self- awareness and authenticity.

Emotion, Affect, and Psychological Well-Being; Emotional expression in the face and body; the physiology of emotion; emotion regulation; how emotion shapes cognition; how emotion is shaped by social contexts; measurement of emotion; the role of emotion in intimate relationships; stress, symptoms, and disease; coping with chronic illness; health systems.

In each area, emphasis is given to studying phenomena at multiple levels of analysis, including the biological, the individual, and the contextual.

Position Summary

Provide research support as research associate for Principal Investigator, Lab Manager and Graduate Student Researchers on projects investigating changes in emotion that occur: (a) with age in normal adult individuals (including a longitudinal sample of long-term marriages), and (b) with neuropathology in individuals with dementia and other neurological disorders. This is a stimulating environment that includes multidisciplinary faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral, undergraduates, and staff working together on a number of large grant-supported projects.

Responsibilities

• Participate in multiple stages of scientific inquiry including: recruiting and scheduling experiment participants, scheduling experimental sessions, testing human subjects, and organizing data.
• Collect psychophysiological, audio and video data using a biopac/computer & audio/video system.
• Perform video editing and production of video stimulus materials.
• Train graduate and undergraduate students in testing procedures, use of physiological equipment, and application of physiological sensors.
• Conduct phone interviews and administer psychological and neuropsychological tests.
• Maintain laboratory data organization for multiple projects.

Required Qualifications

• Organized, responsible, with well-developed oral/written communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work well both individually and as a member of a team. Excellent computer and problem-solving skills.
• Close attention to detail.
• Ability to handle fluctuating priorities and deadlines, to work in a fast-paced laboratory and adjust to changing situations and needs.
• Ability to communicate with community organizations and collaborating laboratories.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in field of social/emotional psychology and experience working in an academic research environment.
• Experience working with human subjects of various ages.
• Experience working with dementia patients, or knowledge of dementia disorders.
• Experience working as a volunteer research assistant in the Berkeley Psychophysiology Laboratory and/or similar lab.
• Experience with advanced survey programming in Qualtrics.
• Familiarity with subject privacy issues/HIPAA.
• Familiarity with statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R, Excel, MatLAB).
• Familiarity with behavioral coding software (e.g., Code Blue, Oedipus).
• Familiarity with psychophysiology data collection (e.g.,Empatica, Biopac).
• Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or related field and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, which is paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $22.02 (Step 1) - $23.28 (Step 2.5).
