Team Overview:

The Network Services and Operations Team is a part of Berkeley IT's Campus IT Infrastructure Department that empowers students, faculty and staff by providing them with access to the tools, resources and information they need. We do this by implementing, managing and maintaining services such as Internet connectivity, Wi-Fi throughout campus and high speed connectivity to support research.

Responsibilities

  • Applies advanced IT concepts to evaluate broad and complex user requirements to determine whether an internal or other operating system is more appropriate.
  • Conducts project planning, cost analysis and vendor comparisons.
  • Performs traffic study analysis to determine best configuration of systems.
  • Initiate or recommend highly complex communications and network system changes.
  • Takes a lead role in testing and evaluation of new or enhanced electronics for network services.
  • Develops specifications for new or enhanced campus network services.
  • Develops proposals for new services.
  • Administers systems that support network services.
  • Takes a lead role in the management of all phases of multiple, large scope, complex network projects: planning, design, procurement, implementation and documentation.
  • Consults with other departments on new or retrofit building projects and to provide advice and guidance on communications infrastructure.
  • Serves as one of the network duty engineers responsible for resolution of network problem determination and resolution outside regular business hours.
  • Troubleshoots highly complex issues in distribution and access networks and electronics.
  • Works directly with vendor/manufacturer technical support to isolate and resolve hardware and software issues affecting electronics.
  • Escalates extremely complex issues to other senior engineers within the group.
  • Recommends and selects training opportunities for professional development in communications technology as they apply to the position.
  • Leads or participates in cross-functional group discussions, activities and efforts


Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of professional communications and network systems in the completion of diverse assignments.
  • Experience performing network service delivery tasks in a campus environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of the practices and techniques of the voice and data field, and the ability to determine a course of action based on guidelines.
  • Highly developed problem-solving skills to resolve issues using defined parameters and technical expertise.
  • Clearly understanding of the communications and network needs of the organization and has skills needed to address those needs.
  • In-depth, advanced understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software, and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
  • Ability to analyze highly complex communication hardware and software systems for maintaining a real-time resource that impacts campus network users.
  • Ability to write tools in a high-level language.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the advancement of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice.


Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $105,500.00 - $150,000.00.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This position may be eligible for a flexible or hybrid work schedule based on candidate availability and business needs.
