Departmental Overview

The focus of the research laboratory is genetic, epigenetic and environmental risk factor studies of autoimmune disorders including multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis. The current projects are part of several well-established collaborations including researchers at UC San Francisco and Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, Oakland.

Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and her Research Manager, receive and process biological samples including peripheral blood, saliva, and other biospecimens.
• Perform DNA/RNA extractions, fractionation, cell isolation, sample aliquoting/plating, DNA quantitation/normalization and computer assisted barcoding/databasing for biological specimens to maintain a large sample repository comprised of samples from multiple investigators.
• Perform PCR, gel electrophoresis, and SPRI cleaning of samples.
• Analyze above assays and present results to supervisors and determine if samples can move on to downstream experiments.
• Possibility to assist with large-scale genotyping of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), DNA methylation profiles, and DNA/RNA sequencing.
• Assist with all routine laboratory maintenance for a clean and safe work area and assist with restocking of supplies and notifying lab manager when stocks/supplies run low.
• Assist with monitoring freezers 24/7.
• Perform additional duties as necessary.

Required Qualifications

• Laboratory experience doing DNA extractions and using PCR-based technology.
• Strong technical skills.
• Ability to multi-task and work efficiently with limited supervision.
• Familiarity and ability to consult/review the literature and public databases relevant to studies of human genetics and autoimmune disease.
• Experience with Microsoft Excel.
• Strong attention to details, good writing, and communication skills.

Education/Training:

• Bachelor's degree in molecular and cell biology, human genetics, or equivalent laboratory-related field and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

• Background and strong interest in human genetics, public health, and epidemiology.
• Experience in bioinformatics and computational biology, including manipulating DNA sequence data and primer design.
• Programming skills such as C, Perl, R, MySQL, etc.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $25.75 (step 1.0) - $30.72 (step 9.0).

• This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
• This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
