Departmental Overview
The mission of the Division of Academic Planning is to facilitate excellence in research and education at UC Berkeley. We oversee the overall academic direction of the university, steward space in university facilities, and facilitate strategic international partnerships. In fulfilling these goals, we collaborate closely with the schools, colleges, departments, and organizations across the campus, looking for synergies across organizational and disciplinary boundaries, and supporting the growth and development of emerging academic disciplines.

The Division of Academic Planning is seeking a Principal Space Planner to provide strategic and long range planning for the programming, design, development and disposition of campus properties and facilities, including buildings, infrastructure and landscape projects. The Principal Space Planner will be trusted to research, collect and analyze planning data to develop campus planning policies and procedures.

  • Plans, organizes, and/or performs the highest level planning services for the campus and/or University-wide administrative officers engaged in physical and community planning functions, such as the development and maintenance of a comprehensive and long range strategic space model and campus surge plan to guide the campus in planning for future surge needs and other flexible space requirements.
  • Develop a model to evaluate space use and adequacy based on existing State and University guidelines and incorporating the campus' faculty recruitment plans, retirement projections, enrollment trends, departmental reviews, and other relevant metrics; replacement, renewal, and expansion of administrative facilities, auxiliary enterprises, and other non-academic facility needs; and consider the impacts of other significant facility events on the campus' physical plant such as the major capital plan for LBNL and the campus' Energy Efficiency Program.
  • Serves as a technical expert in campus planning and community planning problems relating to the campus at either campus or University-wide levels of administration. Provides expert policy advice to campus academic and administrative leaders and policy direction to campus planning staff. policy and guides projects through the capital planning and approval process. Establishes and guides space committees.
  • Performs the most difficult professional work in the development, revision, refinement and/or amplification of long range surge, flexible space and capital improvement plans. Coordinate the various capital renewal programs to ensure alignment of work along campus priorities and to make the most efficient and effective use of campus resources. Serves on various capital project planning committees, evaluates project proposals for alignment with campus strategic goals, and prepares documentation to support project approvals at the campus, Office of the President, Regents, and State government levels. Participate in the development of unique capital project delivery systems aimed at cost effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Assignments typically include resolving complex issues/problems requiring specialized knowledge and incumbent is widely recognized and consulted by campus staff for their expert knowledge of campus and community planning.
  • Resolves small scale space requests and documents temporary space assignments. Update the campus' space inventory system as changes occur.
  • Attends classes, seminars, and conferences that enhance expertise. Serves on departmental, campus-wide and/or university-wide committees as appropriate, and participates in activities that enhance the campus community and support the University mission.

Required Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge/skills in all aspects of city planning, architecture, other planning-related fields, including knowledge/skills in large-scale site planning.
  • Expert written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including expert level political acumen and negotiation skills.
  • Expert skills in building, maintaining and nurturing strong professional relationships to achieve short and long range campus development goals.
  • Expert analytical and project management skills.
  • Expert knowledge of the campus, including its architectural history, short and long range development plans, infrastructure and current, on-going and future design and construction plans.

  • Master's degree in Architecture, City Planning or other planning related field.

Salary & Benefits
Annual salary range: $121,250 - $147,700, commensurate with experience.
