The Supervisor of the Digital Media team within Digital Learning Services is responsible for the leadership, supervision, coaching and mentoring of digital media professionals and a portfolio of digital instructional media projects. The supervisor will:
- Perform supervisory and planning duties. Manage, through staff, the development, delivery and support of digital instructional media in fully online, blended, flipped, graduate, undergraduate and MOOC courses for UC Berkeley. Consult with, assist, and support instructors in the creation of pedagogically sound video and audio content. Collaborate with colleagues in RTL teams and academic departments to improve services.
In this role, the Digital Media Supervisor will manage a media team of 4-5 staff and its work related to online course development and media production. The supervisor collaborates with instructional design staff, as well as RTL and the broader campus, to successfully accomplish departmental and university objectives related to digital strategy. While hard skills and experience in media production is required, soft skills including a growth mindset and positive outlook, diplomacy, and genuine desire and ability to collaborate and work well with others - both clients and colleagues - are essential to successful work. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate their ability to understand technical specifications and functions and translate to non-technical audiences. The position requires the ability to analyze existing processes, workflows, practices and systems and identify where efficiencies and improvements are needed. The supervisor must be able to communicate clearly, actively listen, and successfully lead through uncertainty and ambiguity at times. Being comfortable giving and receiving feedback, particularly when difficult, is key to successfully leading in this role. And finally the position requires kindness, adaptability, compassion and courage.
While a portion of work from home is an option, in-person work at the department offices and on campus is required.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervise direct reports within the digital media team. Coordinate schedules, train and develop team members. Lead and oversee digital media meetings. Manage, monitor and forecast digital media projects in the short and long-term. Assign and allocate team members to projects as necessary. Work with the media coordinator to ensure projects are completed on time and meet pedagogical and production quality standards. Oversee and improve workflows. Manage the execution of operational updates to media team's workflows and procedures including storage strategies, media project organization, equipment and studio management. Provide leadership in the ongoing maintenance of digital media studios, including design, implementation and post-production assistance for a variety of media related projects. Manage team to develop and produce pedagogically sound video content based on best practices for online learning. Collaborate with media specialists, instructional designers and instructors on storyboards and planning documents to facilitate effective integration of media in online learning content.
- Advanced experience and skills managing digital media teams, creative teams, and projects. Advanced experience managing teams through pre-production, filming in studio and on-location settings, editing, media management, graphic design, and accessibility. Advanced experience with or ability to learn Adobe Creative Cloud suite. Demonstrated experience managing multiple competing deadlines and priorities in fast-moving environments. Demonstrated commitment to customer service. Strong critical thinking, problem solving, coaching/mentoring, and conflict resolution skills pertaining to human resources and management responsibilities. Skilled communicator, collaborator, and listener. Demonstrated application of the following skill sets of emotional intelligence: self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining instructional media in a higher education academic environment.
- Working/broad understanding of theories, concepts, and best practices of instructional design and pedagogy.
- Experience with or ability to learn Kaltura.
- Experience supervising motion graphics work.
Salary & Benefits
Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $105,000.00 - $120,000.00.
