Position Summary

Serve as the primary academic advisor for students during their tenure at CPS who are enrolled in credit-bearing courses/degree programs. Each advisor is responsible for advising a particular group of students divided alphabetically by last name from initial enrollment through graduation. Coordinate and lead the Peer Advisors appointed to supplement the staff and support their fellow classmates. Support the faculty advisors as needed. Communicate with students keeping them informed of important deadlines, information and events throughout the entire academic year. Coordinate CPS Advising Center advising events, materials, and various mailings. Continually assess the needs and interests of CPS students by staying current with trends and technology. Serve as the bridge between CPS and the students - gathering formal feedback through surveys and informal feedback through conversations. Use this information in conjunction with current innovative approaches and national trends to adapt/improve services offered by the CPS Advising Center.

Duties and Responsibilities

ADVISING, ACADEMIC PLANNING & STUDENT SUPPORT
  • Serve as the primary academic advisor for an assigned group of CPS students. Advise/meet students individually and in groups, either in person or virtually, throughout their tenure regarding the development and implementation of their academic plan, including majors, minors, course progression and resources available. Assist students in their educational development by constructing educational plans that are compatible with their lives and goals. Foster within students a sense of belonging to CPS and the wider Villanova Community by providing thoughtful support throughout their academic careers. Provide students with direction and motivation by encouraging the successful completion of degree requirements in a timely manner. Inform and refer students to student resources on campus when required. Monitor advisees academic progress and maintain accurate student paper/electronic files.


ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION
  • Review transcript/course information upon receipt from CPS Admissions and Enrollment Team. Determine appropriate transfer of credits following all University and College policies and advising guidelines. Regularly communicate with advisees regarding events and deadlines throughout the academic year, disseminate information regarding registration, course information and important deadlines (i.e., WX). Respond in a timely manner to student inquiries by email and telephone. Coordinate, host and participate in advising events, distribute materials including CPS new student orientation information. Approve all necessary designated educational transactions (drop/add, transfer of credits). Consult regularly with CPS faculty and subject matter experts to stay informed of course and curricular changes. Prepare for and attend College Academic Standing meetings. Oversee audit certification of graduation process and student notification of status. Frequent review of advising services offered by CPS to remain current with national trends, recent technology, College and University polices.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned. Represent CPS advising team at various campus events sponsored by CPS and/or the University.


Participate in events with CPS on occasional nights and weekends.



Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree required
  • Experience in undergraduate student academic advising with an understanding of the academic, personal and professional needs of the non-traditional/adult undergraduate students.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in academic advising or related experience.
  • Sincere commitment to developing the academic, professional and personal well-being of students. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills required to meet with students, staff, faculty and parents. Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a service environment with frequent interruptions. Skills in setting priorities based on the importance of job responsibilities.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office programs.
  • The individual must have a deep commitment to the College of Professional Studies, to the Universitys Catholic/Augustinian heritage and the advancement of its mission, and to serving the needs of a diverse community.




Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree preferred
  • Experience with adult learners preferred.
  • Experience with Banner software.




Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours

Participate in events with CPS on occasional nights and weekends.
