Primary Function
Primary responsibilities of this position include advising undergraduate students in the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) and monitoring academic success and timely progression to degree completion for assigned professional program(s). This position serves as subject matter specialist on academic course content for accredited programs, degree and licensure requirements, and academic policies.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
Advising at Northern Illinois University is critical to retention and student success. Advisors at NIU are deliberative and proactive and are expected to work in collaboration with support units across campus guided by the goal of student success. Advisors are expected to understand and fully utilize technology to support positive student outcomes including utilizing Navigate for scheduling, note-taking, referral and data analysis. All advisors at NIU are expected to be highly aware of the status of the students in their caseload including retention, persistence and graduation outcomes, academic outcomes and progress toward completion and achievement of customized pathways to completion. The position requires the application of theory (i.e. student development, career development, and counseling) to the practice of academic counseling, student career success, and retention programming. This position requires collaboration with faculty, staff, administration, and professional organization contacts, both on and off campus.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum of 2 years of academic advising related experience in higher education
    OR
    a Master’s degree with minimum 1-year prior academic advising-related experience in higher education, educational leadership or student personnel

Education and Experience Preferred
Master’s degree in college student personnel, higher education, academic or career counseling, a related field.
At least one year of experience in one-on-one, student-facing role in higher education such as academic advising or counseling.
Experience using a student information system such as PeopleSoft.
Experience with advising platforms and/or early alert systems such as EAB’s Navigate.
Familiarity with developmental advising.
Excellent organizational, administrative, oral and written skills, interpersonal communication skills and applied computer skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office.
Professional demeanor, strong ethical behavior, personal judgement and decision-making abilities.
Experience as a team player with academic staff and faculty.
Ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently and effectively and the ability to be flexible.
Knowledge/understanding of diversity issues and trends in higher education.
Bilingual- English/Spanish

Intimate knowledge of and use of Navigate for scheduling, note-taking, referrals and data analysis.
Completion of baseline NIU advisor training and commitment to continued professional development and training.
Management of student caseload including regular reporting and monitoring of retention, persistence and graduation outcomes, academic outcomes and progress toward completion and achievement of customized pathway to completion.
Awareness and use of developmental advising and high-touch interventions.
Development and maintenance of customized pathways to graduation for all assigned advisees.
Collaboration on the execution of re-enrollment efforts.
