Position Summary
The Industrial Hygienist (IH) performs a wide variety of health and safety related duties for the Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Department. The IH has frequent oral and written communication with the professional staff (Ph.D., MD, Senior Researchers, Lab Technicians), clerical staff (administrative assistants and clerks), physical plant staff (tradespersons, cleaners, shop personnel, etc.), graduate and undergraduate students, most university departments, regulators and outside vendors. Thus, the IH must communicate well with individuals and be able to independently recognize potentially unsafe conditions and act accordingly to correct the situation. The IH reports directly to the Manager of Safety and Industrial Hygiene Programs.
The work assignments are primarily based on maintaining compliance with applicable state and federal regulations. The IH must be familiar with all aspects of the health and safety programs.
- Prepare technical and administrative reports based on the collection of scientific sampling data.
- Maintain industrial hygiene monitoring and sampling equipment. This includes periodic calibration, upkeep of records, overseeing factory servicing, and ensuring equipment security.
- Develop, maintain and disseminate, information and technical guidelines regarding the analysis and evaluation of industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, and laboratory safety issues.
- Assist departments with the implementation of health and safety policies relating to industrial hygiene and laboratory safety.
- Conduct inspections with Facilities personnel of ventilation systems, building interstitial spaces, plumbing systems, etc. Develop appropriate sampling strategies based on the circumstances of each case.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Industrial Hygiene, public health, or closely related discipline with minimum three years related experience is required.
Additional requirements specific to the requirements of the job include:
- Practical ability with industrial hygiene scientific monitoring equipment.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Must be medically cleared each year to wear a respirator, pass an annual medical physical and be successfully fit-tested in a full face respirator.
The equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
Preferred Qualifications
A Masters degree in industrial hygiene may be substituted for the experience requirement. Experience in an academic and/or research environment preferred. Certifications in Industrial Hygiene (CIH) from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) is desirable. Possession of current NYSDOL certifications for Asbestos Air Sampler & Inspector/Management Planner are also desired.
Physical Demands
Medical clearance to wear a respirator. Standing, walking, twisting, ability to carry and climb ladders needed for inspections, set up sampling equipment, and carry up to 30 lbs.
Salary Range
$80,000 - $90,000
