Definition

Under general supervision of the Dean, Instruction, Humanities and Basic Skills at Coastline Community College, assist with assessment preparation services for students preparing for the English or math placement exam.  Provide online and onsite services (i.e., instructional, technical, and logistical support) as directed from an instructor or other academic personnel. Monitor and report on student progress and provide learning assistance in English or math. Assist tutors assigned to facilitate assessment academy services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a very broad classification in the instructional assistance area. Positions assigned to the class of Instructional Associate perform duties to assist and support a classroom instructor or other academic personnel, in a tutorial program, classroom, lab, or office setting. Specific tasks may vary depending upon the subject area and discipline to which assigned. Work is performed within a framework of established procedures which may not require the physical presence of the instructor or other academic personnel.

Positions in this class may exist in any of the instructional departments or divisions. Incumbents in the class of Instructional Associate are expected to have completed a minimum of two years of college with a major in the subject area to which their position is assigned. Recruitment to fill a position in this class should include the instructional area of assignment, such as "Instructional Associate (Art)" or "Instructional Associate (Mathematics)".

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Assist with the preparation of non-curricular intervention services to help students prepare for English and math placement exams.
  2. Assist with Outreach services in the promotion of college services offered to students.
  3. Meet with students online and onsite to support their progress and preparation for English and math placement.
  4. Attend meetings regularly to report on progress and disseminate information about services.
  5. Assist students with technical issues to access services and resources related to placement exam preparation.
  6. Assist faculty, management and staff members in the promotion and coordination of related events and services
  7. Maintain accurate records.
  8. Assist with the oversight of program tutors connected to the assessment academy.
  9. Assist instructional staff with the instruction, demonstration, and presentation of course assignments and materials for groups of students.
  10. Assist in the preparation of instructional activities.
  11. Assist students with assignments, course content, and study skills; evaluate student work and coordinate appropriate tutorial sessions and supplemental instruction as needed.
  12. Orient students and new faculty on the procedures used and technology available to facilitate learning.
  13. Monitor and record student progress and attendance; prepare and maintain related records and reports; evaluate student needs; confer with instructors regarding student progress.
  14. Recommend appropriate instructional materials and technology to be used by students; maintain and test instructional materials and technology to ensure instructional methods and course content is current, accurate, and relevant in accordance with instructor's curriculum guidelines.
  15. Review educational software and provide recommendations as needed to support instructor's student outcomes.
  16. Respond to student questions and provide information regarding resources available.
  17. Provide preliminary troubleshooting of technical problems for students, staff, and faculty experiencing difficulty with the instructional equipment, course management systems, or log-on procedures; notify college Informational Technology resources for additional support when necessary.
  18. Assist instructors in preparation of manuals, handouts, and training/teaching materials.
  19. Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and priorities related to instructional support.
  20. Perform general clerical functions critical to supporting the instructional area.
  21. Participate in development of the budget and monitor expenditures.
  22. Participate on committees and attend conferences with instructional staff to exchange information and to remain current in instructional support techniques and procedures.
  23. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  1. Instructional and tutorial methods and techniques.
  2. Subject matter and/or discipline of assignment.
  3. Student guidance principles and practices; academic honesty and student code of conduct.
  4. Supplemental Instruction programs.
  5. Community college curriculum and educational requirements.
  6. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.

Ability to:
  1. Provide effective instruction and assistance to students enrolled in instructional area.
  2. Present and demonstrate instructional materials and tutor in the subject area.
  3. Develop tutorials and activities to facilitate student success.
  4. Assess student achievement and encourage student participation.
  5. Troubleshoot and maintain instructional materials and technology.
  6. Respond to questions and assist students as needed.
  7. Maintain accurate records; gather, compile and monitor course success in collaboration with the instructor.
  8. Use a keyboard to complete work accurately and timely.
  9. Work independently, using good judgment, in the absence of supervision.
  10. Plan, organize, and schedule a variety of work and activities.
  11. Oversee the work of others.
  12. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  13. Recommend appropriate instructional materials and resources.
  14. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  15. Perform basic clerical duties and work with statistical data.
  16. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic and disability backgrounds.

Education and Experience:
  1. Completion of two years of college with major course work in English, math, or related field.
  2. Two years' experience in an instructional setting as a tutor or in a similar position pertaining to adult-level skills development.
  3. Or, any combination of education and experience that would provide the required qualifications.

Desirable Qualifications:
  1. At least one-year experience in an instructional/college environment as a tutor, teaching assistant, instructional aide, instructional associate or similar position.
  2. Experience with placement test administration, preparation, or tutoring related to college placement examinations.
  3. Experience with Pearson's MyLab suite.
  4. Experience with launching and sustaining projects and initiatives for student success.
  5. Experience with outreach and student recruitment efforts.

Conditions of Employment

This is a temporary, full-time, categorically-funded, 12-month per year position. The normal hours of work will be 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday with some flexibility to meet the needs of the program. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

PAY PHILOSOPHY: 
Starting salaries for support staff positions begin at Step-1 of the salary range. All movement on the salary schedule will occur July 1 of each year for all classified employees.

Time to Refuel
Vacation
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

Sick Leave
All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
