DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of, the Manager, Art Galleries and Exhibits plans, develops, and manages the revolving exhibits, special events, and daily operations of the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion.  The manager oversees and coordinates programs that showcase the facility as well as extended exhibition spaces  with the goals of promoting high levels of patronage and fostering campus engagement.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Manage, Art Galleries and Exhibits is a first line management position that serves as the curator and primary collection development source for the Arts Pavilion.  The Manager blends gallery and grounds-based shows with publicity, promotions, events, and fundraising to offer exhibitions and arts programs to a public with diverse interests.  The Manager will work varying hours to include evenings, weekends, and holidays for the purpose of advancing funding sources and maximizing the program's accessibility to the public.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following
 

  1. Plan, organize, and facilitate all visual art for the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion and campus grounds. Working with the Art Advisory Committee, establish standards for quality and aesthetics, and preservation.
  2. Develop plans and strategies for accumulating a permanent arts collection of notable significance for lending to other peer-level galleries and venues.
  3. Serve as the primary contact and liaison with exhibiting artists, art educators, professionals, current and potential lenders, and curators and directors of other galleries.
  4. Present the arts programs to college and District leadership with purpose of blending the services into current and long term facility and program planning processes.
  5. Conduct speaking engagements to select interest groups for promoting ideas and program plans, enlisting support for the visual and performing arts, and fundraising.
  6. Collaborate with the Foundation, Marketing, Public Relations and other departments to advance advertising, publicity, and invitations for openings, events, and fundraising. Plan and host a variety of events, presentations, and opening receptions.
  7. Develop and  implement  annual fundraising plans and goals from diverse funding sources . This may include charitable donations, gifts in-kind, fee-based events, and auctions. Prepare proposals for competitive grants and other funding sources.
  8. Supervise and coordinate the activities of volunteers, students, and staff that are involved in exhibitions and art events.
  9. Prepare and monitor budgets for the Arts Pavilion and other art venues. Prepare periodic reports for internal and external use.
  10. Attend arts, interagency, and collegiate meetings and conferences to remain current with trends and to establish networks for sharing of assets and events.
  11. Participate in campus shared governance, promote/build campus engagement, and attend Visual and Performing Arts Division meetings.
  12. Process contracts, waivers and reimbursements for artists and guest speakers.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
Knowledge of:

  1. Principles and practices associated with art gallery management, acquisitions, and preservation of collections.
  2. Historical and contemporary trends in art exhibition.
  3. Insurances, safekeeping, and liabilities associated with owned and loaned art
  4. Art collection development.
  5. Computer-aided tools and social media for communications, documenting inventory, and correspondence.
  6. English skills to prepare professional proposals, reports, and correspondence.
  7. Sufficient math skills to prepare and administer budgets.
  8. Well-developed human relations skills to speak to large audiences, promote services and programs, and convey subject matter to diverse audiences.
 
Ability to:
  1. Carry out the objectives of the position.
  2. Direct activities, programs, and events supporting an art gallery and use of art for beautification.
  3. Develop and maintain relationships with program supporters, community philanthropic and service organizations, donors, and patrons.
  4. Identify, develop, and implement fundraising sources and opportunities in in-kind and dollar value assets.
  5. Work as an active partner with other outreach, publicity, and fundraising-oriented departments and groups,
  6. Work collaboratively with visual and performing arts faculty and administration.
  7. Design processes that ensure the control and security of art assets.
  8. Speak to diverse audiences in a manner that influences funding, participation, and patronage.
  9. Work non-traditional work shifts and extended hours such as evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  10. Demonstrate cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
 
Education and Experience:
  1. Bachelor's degree in Visual and/or Performing Arts with a concentration in Art History or Fine Art.
  2. Two (2) years' experience with art exhibition, promotions, and philanthropy.
 Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Master's degree in Fine Arts, Art, or Art History.
  2. Two (2) or more years of professional experience as a curator.
  3. Knowledge of historical and contemporary trends in art exhibition.
  4. Evidence of active involvement in art exhibition and the art community.
  5. Evidence of effective fundraising experience.
  6. Authorship of professional publications such as articles, reviews, essays, and/or catalogs.
Licenses and Certifications:
  1. May require a valid driver license.

Conditions of Employment

This is a contract, full-time, 12-month per year, Educational Administrator position. The normal hours of work will be 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Flexible schedule and weekends might be necessary to address the needs of the job duties, programs and/or students. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. 

Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance
requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

PAY PHILOSOPHY:
Starting salaries for academic positions are based on a combination of education and experience. Initial placement is within the starting salary range. Further advancements are based on longevity and professional development. An additional annual stipend is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. All movement on the salary schedule will occur July 1 of each year for all eligible employees.

Academic Senate

Time to Refuel
Vacation
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

Sick Leave
All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
