Definition

Under the general supervision of the Dean of Visual and Performing Arts, in consultation with Robert B. Moore Theatre staff, will support rehearsals and performances in the theatre and perform related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Manually opening and closing curtains.
  2. Operating light board and spotlight as required.
  3. Assist with setup and strike of shows which may include the laying down and picking up of a Marley dance floor, setting up and disassembling platforms/risers, deploying and storing the orchestra shell, and placing and removing props and set pieces.
  4. May be called upon to assist with front of house support such as assisting patrons to their seats, monitoring and removing items that block the aisles and exits, and preventing food and drink from being brought into the theatre.
  5. Provide information regarding the theatre to students, faculty and guests.
  6. Monitor and enforce safety protocols.
  7. Direct students in emergency procedures and observe/enforce theatre rules.
  8. Dispose of used materials and, in general, keep the facility neat and organized.
  9. Assist the theatre staff with requests.
  10. Handle and sort colored gel medium as needed.
  11. Organize cables, cords and connectors as needed.
  12. Load and unload gear from trucks and personal vehicles as requested.
  13. Work effectively with others in a team environment.
  14. Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  1. Basic familiarity with theatre terms, protocol, and procedures.
  2. English fluency, courtesy, and professionalism in a theatre environment.
  3. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  4. Modern stage equipment operation.
  5. Safety requirements for operation of stage equipment.

Ability to:
  1. Learn to properly set up, operate, and demonstrate the correct operation of equipment and handling of materials used n the theatre.
  2. Use common tools to construct/assemble production assets.
  3. Use specified theatre devices such as lighting consoles, microphones, speakers.
  4. Move quietly and discreetly backstage during live events.
  5. Respond appropriately in an emergency or urgent event.
  6. Work in a dynamic environment with strict deadlines.
  7. Work in small, cramped spaces, or at a height of more than 20 feet from the floor.
  8. Understand and follow oral and written direction.
  9. Establish and maintain effective cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  10. Demonstrate cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Education and Experience:
  1. Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required qualifications.

Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Two (2) years of college level course work in visual, performing arts or related discipline.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Lifting, carrying, and/or pushing 50+ pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of object weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Exposure to industrial materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Climbing of stairs and ladders.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Pulling ropes.
  • Visual acuity in varying degrees of illumination/lighting.
  • Heights of up to 30 feet.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked and are limited to 28 hours per week.
 
This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Applications are accepted all year long. Departments or Divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill temporary assignments, as needed. (Applications will remain in the pool for one year.)

The hours of work are flexible to meet the needs of performing arts programs, including evening and/or weekend hours for scheduled events. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.
