*Currently Golden West College is looking for people with skilled backgrounds and experience who can fit into our team of hourly interpreters. Hours would be anywhere from 5-20 hours a week based on the interpreters availability and current requests from students. Interpreters do not work more than 28 hours per week. The schedule is dependent on the assignment but can run mornings, afternoons, or evenings Monday through Friday. We are looking for 16 week commitments during our academic semesters*

Assignments are short-term, temporary, and will not exceed 28 hours per week or 160 days per Fiscal Year. This is a continuous recruitment to create a pool of applicants to be used as needed for temporary support as a Sign Language Interpreter. You will be contacted by the hiring manager should the department/division be interested in scheduling an interview. Please do not call the Office of Human Resources regarding the status of your application. All applications will remain in the pool for two years.
 

Representative Duties:

Essential duties and other important responsibilities/duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Perform effective sign language interpreting and/or transliterating services for students, faculty and staff according to accepted American Sign Language/English interpreting procedures.
2. Provide sign language and English interpreting and/or transliterating for deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty and staff in both educational and non-academic settings.
3. Serve as an interpreter at various campus events including, but not limited to, department meetings, student orientations, professional development activities, counseling appointments, assessment testing, field trips, theatrical productions and other extracurricular activities.
4. Provide educational interpreting for students in a lecture environment and individualized instruction.
5. Serve as a liaison between the deaf and hard of hearing students, school faculty and staff; explain the needs and concerns of students.
6. Provide assistance to the Interpreter Coordinator as requested; provide assistance with ITP practicum students.
7. Inform and discuss with faculty to identify potential problems that could inhibit the effective provision of interpreting services including instructional materials or closed-caption equipment.
8. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Knowledge of:
Methods and techniques of signing and interpreting for the deaf and hard of hearing. Interpretation and application techniques of American Sign Language (ASL). Use and operation of various devices for deaf and hard of hearing. Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers. Proper English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.  National Association of the Deaf/Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct.

Ability to:
Perform interpreting services for the deaf and hard of hearing. Communicate effectively to the deaf and hard of hearing using American Sign Language. Interpret and explain school policies and procedures. Provide interpretation services in both academic and non-educational settings. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education:
Graduation from high school or equivalent AND graduation from Interpreter Training Program (ITP) or equivalent.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Assignments are short-term, temporary, and do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked, and are limited to 28 hours per week or 160 days per fiscal year. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. 

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Departments or Divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill temporary assignments as the need arises. Applications are accepted year-round and will remain in the pool for one year. You will be contacted by the hiring manager should the department/division be interested in scheduling an interview. Please do not call the Office of Human Resources regarding the status of your application.
