Definition

Assignments are short-term, temporary, and will not exceed 25 hours per week or 160 days per Fiscal Year. Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Large Group Instruction, to utilize independent judgment and initiative in performing functions in support of faculty and students in the large lecture environment.
Individual must be self-motivated, goal-oriented and understand the importance of record-keeping and working with confidential student information.

Under the general direction of the Coordinator, Large Group Instructional Support Services; to assist with instructional support for the large lecture halls during classes; to perform a variety of general clerical duties in support of the instructors in pre-class preparation; to perform other related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:  Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Assist instructors with pre-class preparation and perform clerical and other non-teaching tasks related to late afternoon and evening classes in the large lecture halls, such as typing, filing, and record keeping.
  2. Open classrooms and ascertain operating status of audio-visual equipment, making minor adjustments as needed and /or requested by instructors.
  3. Operate audio-visual equipment in large lecture halls when audiovisual assistant is not available.
  4. Type a variety of materials for classroom instruction.
  5. Assist coordinator, instructor or permanent assigned staff with the proctoring of exams to students.
  6. Assist with the preparation and dissemination of test results for instructors and students.
  7. Assist instructors in other related classroom activities.
  8. Schedule meetings, appointments, and special events as they pertain to the instructional needs of faculty and students.
  9. Perform other related clerical tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
Knowledge:
The position requires knowledge of the concepts,and activities of large group instruction.  Requires knowledge of organization, equipment, tests, and simulations.  Requires knowledge of instruction, tutoring, study skills development, and test administration. Requires working knowledge of methods and procedures used in standard, record keeping practices.  Requires sufficient mathematical skills. Requires well-developed English language skills to read, analyze, and apply procedural manuals, instructional and software manuals, textbooks and needed resources on learning strategies. Requires well-developed human relations skills to facilitate learning with groups and to convey limited learning concepts to others.  Requires sensitivity to the needs and needs and behavior of student of various ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds.
 
Abilities:
Requires the ability to deliver instructional support to large groups, setting up classroom assignments, simulations, and tests, as well as student assignments. Requires the ability to perform a variety of instructional assistance, and related support functions.  Requires the ability to assist students in understanding the basic fundamentals of the assigned classroom.  Requires the ability to maintain a high standard of customer service in a safe and organized manner.  Requires the ability to assist in the instruction of students in the use of materials,  and computer-aided programs. Requires the ability to perform routine record keeping duties.  Requires the ability to organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively.  Requires the ability to communicate in both formal and informal setting with students, instructors, and outside customers.  Requires the ability to maintain collaborative relationships with faculty, peers, and students in a way that enhances student engagement. 

Education and Experience:
The position requires one year of administrative/clerical support preferably in an education environment.
Or, any other combination of education and experience that meet the required qualifications.

Physical Abilities:
Requires the ability to function effectively indoors in classroom environment engaged in work of primarily an active nature.  Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift and move medium weight materials up to 25 pounds, and quickly move to work stations.  Requires sufficient arm, hand, finger dexterity to setup demonstrations and exercises. Use hair care and cosmetology equipment, and use a computer keyboard and other office equipment.  Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings and to serve customers.  Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and labels and to observe students perform tests and assignments.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed indoors where safety considerations exist from physical labor and use of chemicals.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Assignments are short-term, temporary, and do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked, and are limited to 28 hours per week or 160 days per fiscal year. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. 

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. The normal hours of work are typically 4:00pm to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; some flexibility may be required to meet the needs of the department. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.
