Definition

A student assistant works in a particular department of the college or the district site and has job responsibilities specifically designed for a student. Assignments typically deal with clerical or communication related duties and assistance to any division. However, the nature of the job may vary from department to department. These jobs also take into account the class timings and exam schedule of the student and are more flexible than off-campus jobs.
At Orange Coast College, we define Student Equity as securing fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all students.  Through this program we assure that, regardless of background, students are supported with resources and services needed to achieve their educational goals.  Key populations of students served by the Student Equity program are: Low Income, African American, Latinx, Native American, Foster Youth, Disabled Students, and Veterans.
The Peer Ambassadors serve as energetic and enthusiastic guides to help first-year students succeed at Orange Coast College (OCC). They work to provide a welcoming environment that is conducive to students' needs and supportive of student success. Peer Ambassadors also serve to develop and maintain relationships with first-year students by providing assistance and support that is focused on a smooth transition to the college experience.
 
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Examples include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Serve as a resource for new OCC students.
  2. Serve as a positive role model.
  3. Establish rapport with designated students and provide ongoing check-in via phone calls, meetings, and workshops while maintaining confidentiality.
  4. Refer students to appropriate campus departments offering campus and/or community resources.
  5. Assist with the development of activities and goals to be accomplished with assigned student group.
  6. Attend meetings, trainings, and workshops to increase knowledge, awareness, and skills regarding equity and inclusion at Orange Coast College.
  7. Share experiences and information on student success.
  8. Work with program staff to develop workshops around topics pertinent to student success for OCC students.
  9. Document interactions with students.
  10. Assist with data collection and file maintenance.
  11. Attend program group social/cultural events.
  12. Participate in weekly staff meetings.
  13. Meet regularly with staff mentor.
  14. Provide clerical office support, such as answering phones, filing, sorting mail.
  15. Use a computer and applicable software to enter and retrieve information and reports.
  16. Greet and direct public and other students or employees in a high traffic department/division.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Knowledge and skills:
Requires attendance as a student of Orange Coast College for at least two (2) semesters. Requires good academic standing with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5. Requires general knowledge of student life and campus resources available to the OCC community. Requires knowledge and understanding of the diverse culture of a community college district and the community we serve. Requires a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
 
Abilities:
Requires the ability to demonstrate leadership potential. Requires the ability to demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills. Requires the ability to demonstrate a desire to assist student peer groups and promote successes. Ability to learn and share information about OCC, the community we serve, student life and campus resources. Work with and mentor incoming, first-time freshman students. Ability to demonstrate and serve as a role model for new students through integrity and inclusivity. Ability to operate standard office machines and equipment, including personal computers and keyboards, copiers, printers, etc. Requires the ability to maintain records and filing systems. Requires the ability to learn, understand and apply District and campus rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Requires the ability to balance work and studies.
 
Education and Experience:
This position typically requires a High School diploma or GED.
This position is defined by Board Administrative Procedure AP 7120 Student Assistants as follows:  Student assistants are defined as a person who is eligible for the college work study program, enrolled in a work experience education program, or enrolled in 12 or more units during the fall or spring semesters. Student assistants may not work more than 19 hours per week during the fall or spring semesters.
 
Physical Abilities:
Student assistant must be able to function indoors engaged in work of a primarily sedentary nature. Requires near vision to write and to read printed materials and computer screens. Requires hearing and speech for ordinary and telephonic conversation and to hear sound prompts from equipment. Requires ambulatory ability to sit, often for long periods f time, move about campus locations, and to reach work materials. Requires manual and finger dexterity to type/keyboard at an acceptable rate and/or operate a mouse and/or otherwise operate a computer and other equipment. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
 
Working Conditions:
Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.
