    Overview


    The Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health combines four important areas of expertise within Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. These are public/population health, international medicine, wildlife and conservation medicine and infectious disease research. The alignment of these areas promotes cross-disciplinary strengths that are important in achieving the department's goal of improving human, animal and ecosystem health locally, nationally and internationally. Research in the Department aims to advance understanding of the biology and host interaction of pathogens, particularly those causing tickborne diseases, and to use this information to develop new treatments and prevention.



    What You'll Do


    Under the direction of senior research scientists, the incumbent will assist in a wide range of experiments that include molecular biology, serology, and biochemical techniques. Additionally, the incumbent will be involved in assisting the experiments using ticks carrying the Lyme disease causing bacteria Borrelia and tick colony maintaining.


     


    As a sr. Research Technician you will assist the health monitoring and husbandry of the health of laboratory animals, including wild- and domestic birds and rodents, animal necropsy and experiments using ticks carrying the Lyme disease causing bacteria Borrelia.


     


    Additional responsibilities include:



    • Testing the efficacy of vaccines and prophylaxis to block Lyme disease bacterial transmission using ticks and mouse models, and maintaining the tick colony.

    • Testing the infectivity of the wild- and domestic birds in the Lyme disease bacterial infection study.

    • Assisting to monitoring the health and husbandry of laboratory animals, including birds and rodents, that are part of the study.

    • Contribute to general lab maintenance like;

      • Restocking lab supplies

      • Ordering supplies

      • Organization and maintenance including glassware cleaning, disposal of hazardous and biohazardous waste, autoclaving

      • Minor equipment maintenance

      • preparing solutions.



    • Assist in analyzing data, manuscript preparation, presenting archiving data arising from the experiments

    • Other related duties as assigned.



    What We're Looking For


    Basic Requirements:



    • 1 or more years of experience in biomedical, veterinary, or related research laboratory

    • Bachelor’s degree in biological or veterinary sciences

    • Ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, and other basic computer skills

    • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. with or without accommodation.

    • Willingness to work with laboratory model species

    • Willingness to work with infectious agents in a Biosafety Level 2 environment.


     


    Preferred Qualifications:



    • Advanced capabilities with Microsoft Excel formulas and spreadsheets


     



    Pay Range

    Minimum $24.00, Midpoint $28.55, Maximum $33.10
     

    Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
