Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) is a comprehensive college health service providing fully accredited, primary medical care, counseling and psychological services, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty, and staff. UHS provides on-campus medical care and coordinates supplemental needs for off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. UHS manages the student health insurance and workers' compensation insurance programs.

Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Services are designed to minimize the impact of illness, emotional distress and injury on studies and work. Responsibilities

  • Independently acquires and applies skills and knowledge of professional concepts in clinical informatics to complex projects. Analytic development will focus on electronic health record (EHR), student enrollment, and UHS insurance/financial systems, requiring merging of datasets. Obtains training necessary to query data from the UHS Electronic Health Record (EHR) report databases, namely Point n Click (PnC) and EPIC.
  • Performs advanced statistical analysis, prepares graphs/charts, participates in the preparation of various reports, presentations, and clinical and operational dashboards in consultation with the UHS Informatics and Clinical Quality teams. Scope includes developing and running SQL based ad hoc and routine reports within PnC/Epic and leveraging Tableau and other tools to create and publish dynamic dashboards and visualizations.
  • Defines systems and applications to support various functions. Applies skills and experience as a seasoned clinical informatics professional to projects of a medium size at all levels of complexity, or portions of large projects.
  • Works with technical and clinical personnel to develop and implement complex clinical informatics solutions and to create integrated architecture to ensure optimal use of tools and components. Collaborates closely with healthcare team members and IT applications and technical teams to translate operations workflow and patient experience objectives into technical requirements. As assigned, works with staff members across the UHS departments to optimize effective use of systems.
  • Works on project teams that include clinical staff to improve clinical informatics planning and systems. Helps develop metrics and analytics that support clinical and operation decisions that are cost-effective, scalable, and meet present and future needs.
  • Performs quality assurance testing of complex scope. Writes and maintains appropriate documentation of design and deployment processes, workflows, and results. As necessary, provides support, troubleshooting, problem solving, maintenance, and instruction for clinical informatics users.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Education, Experience & Additional Licenses & Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare information technology, computer science, or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
  • Three (3+) or more years of relevant professional level experience working with clinical information systems and developing reports.
  • Professional level experience working with data visualization tools, such as Tableau.
  • Extensive experience and working knowledge of all MS office products. Knowledge and experience of database management technologies.
  • Intermediate level experience in database management
  • Will be expected to be certified in assigned EMR vendor's product/module within the first 6 months of employment. Must satisfy all vendor testing requirements to be certified without needing to attend vendors training a second time for the same class.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of several clinical informatics specialty areas, including: Knowledge of clinical workflows, user interface optimization, clinical decision support, rules development, data integration and mining, clinical ontologies and adoption of technology.
  • Thorough knowledge of all relevant clinical informatics software and technology, and the complex concepts, principles, policies, methodologies, and industry standards and practices involved with patient care and electronic medical data management in the UC health care system.
  • Detail oriented, with strong project management skills and proven ability to independently effectively manage time, see projects through to completion, meet deadlines, organize competing priorities, and effectively address complex, urgent issues as they arise.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate productively, work in a team environment, and to train and support clinical informatics users at all professional and technical levels throughout the medical center.
  • Strong problem-resolution skills, with the ability to quickly diagnose problems, and develop, test, and implement appropriate and effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work with senior staff and managers in clinical information technology, health care management, and business analytics, serving as a technical resource and providing advice and counsel on issues of functionality, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, policy, and performance.
  • Strong analytical skills and intermediate level experience with selecting, developing, and running queries in SQL based reporting tools and writing custom queries and workflows in tools related to data collection, analysis, and visualization (including Tableau, PowerBI, SAS or SPSS, Excel, Qualtrics, Google Suite, and other related programs/tools.)
  • Knowledge of and intermediate level experience in creating and maintaining reports and dashboards for clinical and business information systems.
  • Intermediate level experience with data preparation; cleaning, structuring, transforming, and validating data for use in dashboards or other analyses.
  • Prior experience performing quality assurance testing for technical projects and the ability to create and maintain technical documentation related to clinical workflows, data capture, and data analysis.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, presentation and report writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to actively foster a positive, welcoming climate, and value, include and support all in the UC Berkeley community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Point n Click EHR experience.
  • Advanced level experience with database management and various third-party report building/visualization tools.
  • Experience in a large, complex healthcare environment.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Epic Certifications in Clarity, Radar, Reporting Workbench or other Epic applications.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

  • The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,300-$121,800.
  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
