Reporting to the Head of the Special Collections Department, the Exhibits Coordinator performs duties related to planning and implementation of exhibit curation, design, and installation. The Exhibits Coordinator will work closely with UNT and non-UNT affiliated collaborators, guest curators, and students in preparing and promoting exhibits and related events. In addition to creating physical exhibits, the Exhibits Coordinator will create online exhibits for each of the standard Reading Room exhibits, and any additional exhibits when appropriate.

  • Work with UNT faculty and other guest curators to create two standard Reading Room exhibits each year, and coordinate related programming, including the standard lecture/reception event. Additional exhibits may be created or displayed upon request and depending on availability.
  • Work to align exhibit content and programming with curriculum and create opportunities for students to engage with special collections materials whenever possible.
  • Seek opportunities for funding exhibits and exhibit related programming through donor cultivation and grant writing.
  • Ensure that lenders, gift in kind donors, and financial supporters receive special and appropriate recognition
  • Create and maintain beneficial inter-institutional relationships and oversee lending, borrowing, and other cooperative exhibit-related programming
  • Draft, or work with guest curator to draft, original exhibit text and captions.
  • Utilize professional museum standards for handling and displaying historical documents, rare books, photography, art, artifacts and memorabilia
  • Maintain a workflow, in accordance with Special Collections procedures, to gather collections materials for display, keep materials safe during the interim, and return materials to their proper location.
  • Work with graphic designers to create display and advertising materials for each exhibit.
  • Work with Preservation team to ensure safety of materials on display, create mounts, and cut frame mats.
  • Create online exhibits for each standard Reading Room exhibit, including overseeing digitization of print materials and photography of artifacts. Create additional online exhibits when appropriate.
  • Maintain exhibits on display, as well as display inventory including frames, stands, pedestals, and cases.
  • Advertise Special Collections exhibits and programming using social media platforms, local advertising platforms, sending email blasts, and maintaining contact lists.
  • Conduct tours of exhibits upon request.
  • Coordinate the Biennial Artists' Book Competition and exhibit, including advertising the call for entries, communicating with entrants, securing jurors, and setting up display and reception.
  • Work with the External Relations department to create and maintain promotional materials for the department.
  • Perform other duties in support of Special Collections' main functions, as required.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Museum Studies or closely related field
  • At least one year of experience planning, designing, and mounting original exhibitions of rare and unique library collections
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional museum standards for handling and displaying materials in a variety of formats
