Overview

The Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health combines four important areas of expertise within Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. These are public/population health, international medicine, wildlife and conservation medicine and infectious disease research. The alignment of these areas promotes cross-disciplinary strengths that are important in achieving the department's goal of improving human, animal and ecosystem health locally, nationally and internationally. Research in the Department aims to advance understanding of the biology and host interaction of pathogens, particularly those causing tickborne diseases, and to use this information to develop new treatments and prevention.


What You'll Do

Under the direction of senior research scientists, the incumbent will assist in a wide range of experiments that include molecular biology, serology, and biochemical techniques. The incumbent will be involved in experiments using ticks carrying the Lyme disease causing bacteria Borrelia. The incumbent is expected to assist in generating and analyzing data, manuscript preparation, presenting and archiving data arising from those experiments, and contributing to general laboratory maintenance. Other related duties as assigned. The incumbent will also be involved in animal necropsy and experiments using ticks carrying the Lyme disease causing bacteria Borrelia. The incumbent is expected to assist in analyzing data, manuscript preparation, presenting and archiving data arising from those experiments; and contributing to general laboratory maintenance. Other related duties as assigned.

 

Essential functions to the role are:

  • Testing the efficacy of antibodies to block Lyme disease bacteria transmission using ticks and mouse models, and maintain the tick colony.
    • Perform artificial tick feeding chamber assays using antibodies and determine bacterial transmission with qPCR,
    • Perform microinjection of ticks,
    • Maintain the tick colony,
    • ensuring cleanliness (i.e, prevent mold outbreaks),
    • Keep inventory of the ticks and tick infection experiments in mice)
  • General lab maintenance; restocking lab supplies, ordering supplies, organization and maintenance including glassware cleaning, disposal of hazardous and biohazoardous waste, autoclaving; minor equipment maintenance; preparing solutions.


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  •  1 or more years of experience in biomedical or related research laboratory
  •  Bachelor’s degree in biological or veterinary sciences
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, and other basic computer skills
  •  Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. with or without accommodation
  • Willingness to work with laboratory model species
  • Willingness to work with infectious agents in a Biosafety Level 2 environment.


Pay Range

Minimum $24.00, Midpoint $28.55, Maximum $33.10
 

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
