Minimum Salary: $3,880.23 per month

Maximum Salary: $5,482.67 per month

Location: PC-Main Campus

Basic Function:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide sign language interpreter services to students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have other communication disorders; assist and tutor students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Representative Duties:
Interpret and translate for students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have other communication disorders in classrooms or other instructional settings.
Translate from English into American Sign Language, and from American Sign Language into English.
Assess student communication skills in speech, lip reading, signs and finger spelling to adapt communication methods based on student needs and preferences.
Assist instructor to meet special student needs in the classroom; assist instructor with the presentation of learning materials and instructional activities.
Assist hearing impaired students as necessary, including clarifying an instructor's question and a response.
Tutor students who are deaf or hard of hearing in a variety of subjects as assigned.
Assist with campus orientation and related activities.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Experience as a sign language interpreter in an educational setting or family-related experience as an interpreter, using oral and sign communication, and current enrollment or successful completion of an advanced sign language or interpreting class. Interpreter experience in an educational setting is desirable.

Successful completion of an interpreting evaluation.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
American Sign Language and sign systems.
Variety of subject matter being interpreted.
The nature and problems of deafness.
Current developments, trends and techniques in the field of sign language interpreting.
Basic principles and practices of classroom instruction.
Ability to:
Translate and interpret using manual and oral methods of communication.
Tutor students on an individual basis in a variety of subjects.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Salary Grade: 42.5
