Departmental Overview

The College of Chemistry houses the College of Chemistry Dean's Office, the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The College ranks among the most prominent in the nation, and is renowned for their excellence in a wide range of sub-disciplines and applications in the chemical sciences. The College's undergraduate programs are rigorous, and attract a diverse group of motivated, high-achieving students. In addition to completing a challenging curriculum, our students engage in research, internships, study abroad, and a variety of other co-curricular pursuits.

Position Summary

To conduct all aspects of elemental analyses using a Combustion Analyzer and assist students and outside submitters on sample preparation and interpretation of results, as well as maintain and train users on an Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) optical emission spectrometer for trace metal detection.

Responsibilities

Technical Services and Research Projects:

  • Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur analyses for the customers.
  • High-level consulting on sample preparation for CHNS analysis.
  • High-level consulting on method development and sample preparation for the inductively-coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry.
  • Day-to-day operation, maintenance, repair and optimization of all instrumentation and accessory devices such as the FlashSmart CHNS Analyzer (Fisher Scientific), ICP Optima 7000DV Perkin Elmer spectrometer, glove box, O2 analyzer, and microbalances.
  • Purchasing of new equipment.
  • Safe handling and disposal of toxic and radioactive materials.
  • Assisting in elemental analyses data interpretation.
  • Ensure safety, including handling of radioactive materials.
  • Ordering of reagents and consumables.


Administrative:

  • Managing the budget of the Facility (approximately $150,000 per year), billing, overseeing annual budget status reports and adjustment of recharge rate for analytical services.
  • Communications with customers, Facility users, and the College Services personnel.
  • Documentation of radioactive material handling, as a Radiation Use Authorization (RUA) holder Generation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to comply with the Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) regulations.
  • Secure resources and updating the Facility instrumentation park.


Other Duties Assigned:

  • Hiring and training students on the use of the ICP instrument.
  • Attracting new customers.


Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate level coursework in organic and inorganic chemistry.
  • Advanced knowledge of analytical chemistry and instrumentation for chemistry.
  • Advanced communication skills (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Salary & Benefits

This is a 50% part-time (20 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, which is paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $28.85 (Step 1) - $36.61 (Step 13).
