Team Overview:

Data Solutions resides within the broader Berkeley IT Campus Applications & Data unit, which ensures that the University's mission-critical applications and data are aligned, designed, integrated, and managed together. Data Solutions consists of Integration Services, responsible for data integration and architectural considerations across campus applications, as well as the Data Analytics team, responsible for campus-wide analytics and reporting, the Data Engineering Team, and the Portfolio Management Team. These are exciting areas that will experience growth and the need for innovation as the campus develops the governance, services and culture that support data as a critical campus asset.

Responsibilities

  • UC Berkeley's Integration Services (IS) seeks a Hybrid Cloud Operations Engineer who helps define, design, implement, and support infrastructure services and integration solutions on public & private clouds and on-premise *nix operating systems.
  • You'll help continuously evolve our cloud-native architecture by incorporating automation, elasticity, resiliency, and a zero-trust security stance in all systems administration functions.
  • You'll deploy, configure, test, and monitor data integration solutions, such as RESTful APIs, message queues, and streaming technologies, as well as the tools needed to support those tasks.
  • You'll need to exhibit solid skills in troubleshooting & problem solving, testing & quality assurance, security enforcement, customer support, and oral & written communication, as well as a strong desire to learn.


Required Qualifications

  • Advanced, broad knowledge of and experience working with IT systems.
  • Fluency with *nix command line interfaces and utilities.
  • Highly advanced analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud operations processes & practices and demonstrated experience with public cloud IaaS & PaaS design and operations-preferably in AWS.
  • Advanced knowledge of information security best-practices.
  • Fluency with scripting and automation-preferably in Python and Bash.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to architectural design discussions and to carry those designs through deployment into operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing internal and inter-departmental technical support using a ticket queue.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing and managing technical documentation
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, multi-task, and collaborate effectively as part of a physically distributed team.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with technical and non-technical staff and management.
  • Ability to develop peer networks across campus to maintain awareness of technology, support problem resolution, and obtain consensus.
  • Desire and ability to continuously explore and learn new tools and technologies.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with CI/CD pipeline deployment tools and practices-preferably using Jenkins, GitHub, and/or AWS CodeDeploy.
  • Experience with tools and services used to prepare, combine, and stream diverse data for centralized analysis-preferably AWS Glue, Athena, and/or OpenSearch.
  • Ability to query relational databases using SQL-preferably MySQL or PostgreSQL versions.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code-preferably using SaltStack, Terraform, and/or AWS CloudFormation.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,800.00 - $122,000.00.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This position is eligible for flexible, hybrid or fully-remote work (telecommuting) based on candidate availability and business needs.
