Position Summary

This position will serve as the Fire & Life Safety Manager for the entire university. To ensure proper training, the candidate will work closely with and report directly to the Manager of Fire & Life Safety. Upon completion of training, they will report to the Associate Director.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Develop, implement and maintain strategic initiatives, policies, procedures and educational programs for fire and life safety.
  • Monitor regulatory agencies for new or revised regulations. Determine potential impact(s) to the University. Develop plans for establishing and maintaining compliance.
  • Serve as primary interface with the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC), Amherst, and Buffalo Fire Departments in relation to fire safety, inspections emergency response and pre-planning. Manage the annual multi-month campus inspection process. When necessary, develop and oversee compliance plans to address OFPC citations.
  • Inspect buildings to identify code violations and fire/life safety hazards. Engage with operations staff, occupants and others to identify and implement corrections. Maintain a systematic program to track all violations.
  • Manage fire and life safety staff in the Fire Extinguisher and Suppression Systems Programs. This includes setting work priorities and objectives.
  • Review plans and schematics for new facilities and renovations according to the Fire Prevention and Building Code of NYS and referenced NFPA standards. Consult with and make recommendations to design and construction personnel.
  • Oversee fire extinguisher, fire alarm, and fire suppression systems testing and maintenance.
  • Serve as a lead member of the HazMat Emergency Response Team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree plus 3 years of full-time experience with fire/life safety or related field.
  • New York State Code Enforcement Official.
  • Demonstrated experience with emergency planning and response teams and fire department operations.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of New York State Building Codes.
  • Experience as a fire fighter, codes enforcement officer, fire safety officer or manager of a fire and life safety program.
  • University experience.
  • Certification in fields related to fire and life safety.
