Departmental Overview

The Disabled Students' Program promotes an inclusive environment for students with disabilities. We equip disabled students with appropriate accommodations and services to achieve their individual academic goals. We are dedicated to supporting disabled students and collaborating with the campus community to remove barriers to educational access and embrace the University's values of equity and inclusion. Position Summary

The Assistant Disability Specialist works under the supervision of the Lead Disability Specialist Supervisor and is responsible for working as part of a team responsible for providing mandated accommodations and services to students with disabilities. This position works closely with the Administration Team and the DSP Specialist Team to help coordinate intakes, process documentation, provide receptionist coverage, conducts student drop-ins, and assist with intakes. The position also involves planning, developing, and implementing programs, processes, and activities for students with disabilities in accordance with federal and state law to ensure their access to the academic and campus environment.

Responsibilities

Case Management:

  • Reviews and coordinates applications for services and documentation for students with disabilities; assists students with the completion of necessary forms and application.
  • Serves as the initial point of contact for students requesting accommodations.
  • Evaluates sufficiency of documentation for intakes and provides ongoing communication and support throughout the application process.
  • Works collaboratively with DSP Specialist Team and DSP Administration team; proactively develops new workflows to improve accommodation services.
  • Conducts intakes for temporary disabilities and serves as a backup for drop-in hours.


Student Support:

  • Provides overview of program services; provides general informational sessions for new and continuing DSP students.
  • Coordinates and assists with DSP outreach and programming.
  • Responsible for sending out notifications and updates to students.
  • Refers students, faculty, and staff to additional campus support services when appropriate.


Database/Website Coordination:

  • Completes and maintains timely and accurate files and records in AIM related to student contact; reviews student profiles, case notes interactions, and deactivates inactive students.
  • Assists with creating website updates for the Specialist unit.
  • Maintains DSP event calendar, Specialist drop-in calendar, and assists with posting announcements on the DSP Website.


Administration:

  • Provides back-up support for reception.
  • Assists with scheduling intake accommodation appointments, in-person tabling, and general office duties.
  • Hires and supervises student office assistants for general DSP support.
  • Assists with the DSP Tech Grant application process and awards.


Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the legal framework involving accommodations for disabilities through state and federal laws and regulations in relation to the narrow focus of specialization.
  • Experience in working with students with disabilities in an academic environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with campus community, including students, academic personnel, and general public, in a multicultural environment.
  • Skill in communicating with students, faculty, and staff concerning access accommodations.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time, and complete duties in a timely manner.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Salary & Benefits

This is a 2-yr, full-time (40 hours/week), contract appointment, eligible for UC benefits with the possibility of extension with continued funding. This is a non-exempt, hourly paid position.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $29.69 - $34.48.
