We are seeking an individual with a biology background and expertise in working with mouse models of disease to support our gene and nucleic acid therapeutics efforts for retinal degenerations. In this position you will:

  • work on an exciting scientific project to develop novel gene and nucleic acid therapeutics toward treatments for certain retinal and ocular degenerative conditions
  • work in a multidisciplinary lab that has expertise in molecular biology, biophysics, and bioengineering, with a focus on preclinical translation of nucleic acid therapeutics

We are working to optimize our new therapeutic technology which involves bioinformatics, molecular, biochemical, cellular and animal experiments. You will predominantly work on the animal side of this program to deliver therapeutics to the eye and test outcomes in mouse models of retinal degenerations. We have mouse models of retinal degenerations that will serve to test our emerging therapeutic agents for both efficacy and toxicity.

This work will mostly involve microscope-assisted injections into mouse eyes, followed by mouse retinal imaging approaches and retinal electrophysiology approaches that help us to determine if the therapeutics are functional and/or toxic. You will also assist in bioinformatics and biochemical and cellular experiments to help develop these novel therapeutics.

After processing experimental data and applying statistics to evaluate significance and refine performance models, you will collaborate with the Principal Investigator and colleagues to develop novel strategies to further enhance this class of therapeutic agents.

After learning essential tools you will work independently and exercise scientific judgement based upon your expertise. There will be regular discussion of experimental outcomes with the Principal Investigator and colleagues who will encourage your participation to structure the next experimental plans and scientific strategies. You can make intellectual contributions to the emerging science based upon your expertise and experience.

With the Principal Investigator and colleagues you will place orders and maintain lab protocols, records, and safety documentation.

In your experimental expertise you will train others (e.g., students, post-docs).

With the Principal Investigator and colleagues you will help prepare manuscripts for publications, and aid in preparation of grant proposals and reports to acquire new and maintain existing funding.
