Position Summary
The University at Buffalo Libraries seek an innovative and highly motivated Collections Strategist & Resource Access Librarian to provide leadership and guidance in transforming the nature of collection development within the Libraries. As a member of the Discovery Services Team, you will be responsible for the operational management of collection funds, collection development training, and collection assessment. You will have the opportunity to coordinate and collaborate with colleagues across the University Libraries in the implementation of collection development strategies and operations.

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage central collection development funds under the direction of the Associate University Librarian for Discovery and Delivery Services;
  • Administer the selection and renewal of centrally funded e-resources and oversee the centrally funded monographic approval plans, in consultation with the Collections Committee and individual librarians;
  • Lead and manage resource access activities including licensing review and negotiation and facilitating access to licensed content;
  • Participate in evaluating vendor offers; prepare and present information to appropriate library groups to help inform collection decisions; participate in vendor negotiations.;
  • Serve as the primary contact for collection assessment activities that may include program reviews, accreditation reports, and internal assessments;
  • Incorporate data-driven and user-focused assessment methodologies to analyze the libraries’ current collection management program;
  • Provide support to collections coordinators and subject specialists for the selection of library materials across all formats.

Minimum Qualifications
We would like the Collections Strategist & Resource Access Librarian to have these minimum skills, abilities, and education:

  • Master’s degree in the field of library and information science, from an ALA-accredited institution;
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education with the ability to support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment;
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in developing academic library collections, including demand-driven acquisitions, evidence-based acquisitions, coordinated collection development, and shared collections;
  • Demonstrated competency in collections assessment and evaluation across varied formats, collections and disciplines;
  • Solid understanding of the research university environment and scholarly communications issues;
  • Understanding of evolving scholarly publishing and dissemination models related to open access and repositories;
  • Demonstrated organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills;
  • Ability to plan, document, and complete projects;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
We would be excited to know if you have the following preferred experience:

  • Professional library experience, preferably at a research institution, in collection development and management, demonstrating innovative accomplishments and solid knowledge of the scholarly communication life cycle;
  • Experience using integrated library system and electronic resource management functions, including experience with Ex Libris products;
  • Budgeting, financial management, and assessment skills;
  • Familiarity with project management techniques;
  • Ability to work in an atmosphere of continuous change;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emerging ideas of librarianship, including the capabilities and future trend of library technology and systems to optimize the discovery and delivery of scholarly resources.
