Departmental Overview

The Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS - https://bids.berkeley.edu) was founded in 2013 to build on Berkeley's strength in data science with a multidisciplinary emphasis. BIDS aims to facilitate and enhance the development and application of cutting-edge data science techniques in the biological, physical, social and engineering sciences. Today, BIDS is part of the new College of Computing, Data Science and Society (CDSS), where it serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research, tool development, and exchange of ideas between methodologies in computing, statistics and AI. BIDS connects with domain experts from across the entire disciplinary spectrum on campus, and hosts collaborations with local and national partners, including Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and NASA in the unique intellectual ecosystem of Berkeley.

The incumbent will be involved in the development of server / OS / desktop / mobile applications and services including researching, designing, developing specifications for designing, writing, modifying, testing, debugging, troubleshooting and maintaining source code. The qualified individual will also have direct or related involvement in designing related databases, user interfaces, integration to other systems / applications, content or multimedia processes. Work includes analysis and design to post-production processes, quality assurance, maintenance and documentation.

Responsibilities

60% Applies advanced software concepts to plan, design, develop, modify, debug, deploy and evaluate highly complex database structure for functional areas. Develops and applies an in-depth understanding of scientific research requirements, community standards, and leadingindustry practices. Develops and coordinates project plans including project roadmapsand leads the development of a long-term, community vetted plan for the CLEAN Initiative.

20% Performs or directs highly complex data modeling, performance and integration testing and builds interfaces. Performs sophisticated data and systems analysis to identify concerns with the ecosystem of tools as a whole, and works directly with the research and open source development community to address those. Initiates and oversees changes in development, maintenance, and documentation standards. Investigates and helps determine specifications for cross-project integration and data sharing.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of secure software development.
  • Highly advanced skills associated with software specification, design, modification, implementation and deployment of large-scale scope.
  • Excellent project leadership and management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
  • Advanced experience with identification and use of code libraries and open-source forums.
  • Advanced experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
  • Demonstrated software repository skills.
  • Experience developing and executing complex test plans.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated complex problem- solving skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,000 - $120,000.
