The Fire Extinguisher Inspection Supervisor will be responsible for managing the Fire Extinguisher and Emergency Lighting programs for the University at Buffalo campuses and off-campus facilities. This will include overseeing and performing the installation, inspection, and replacement of portable fire extinguishers in university facilities. Conduct training classes in the proper selection and use of portable fire extinguishers. Evaluate fire extinguisher locations according to NFPA Standards and the Fire Code of New York State. Oversee the emergency lighting inspection contractor and report deficiencies to Facilities Operations for repair. This position will also be responsible for continuous inspection of University facilities and reporting of safety related issues for correction.

Key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Management of the University’s monthly fire extinguisher inspection program, including the supervision of staff and maintenance of adequate records.
    • Participate in evacuation drills; provide guidance/feedback to evacuation teams.
    • Assist in the development and training in building evacuation plans to faculty, staff, and students.
    • Participate in and assist with various other safety programs.
    • Provide emergency response – must be able to respond to emergencies outside of normal business hours.
    • Inspect, replace/recharge and install portable fire extinguishers.
    • Conduct code and building inspections for compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies.
    • Review & investigate fire alarm system activations, determine cause(s) and identify corrective actions.
    • Participate as a member of the Haz Mat Response Team.
    • Assist with the Hot Work Permit Program.
    • Work with the Office of Equity Diversity and Inclusion to consult / meet specific needs of individuals requiring special accommodations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An Associate’s degree in Fire Science or a closely related science field.
  • 2 years of experience in a fire protection related field.
  • Excellent customer service skills and good interpersonal communication skills are required.
  • Creative problem-solving skills are desirable.
  • The ability to use Microsoft Office tools, word, excel and access programs is highly desirable.
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of the requirement.
 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Documented training in the inspection, testing and repair of portable fire extinguishers is preferred.
  • Certification as a New York Code Enforcement Officer is desirable.
  • Experience in an academic, research or government environment is preferred.
