Oversees, organizes, coordinates, and administers health services that enhance the health status and education of adult students. Serves as the team leader for Student Health Center operations and provides professional nursing services, including case management, to a diverse population of students including those with medical and mental health conditions and on-site emergency triage. Collaborates with other health and behavioral care providers and agencies to coordinate health care. Ensures compliance with medical and educational laws pertaining to college health.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Registered Nurse - Charge is a fully qualified and licensed patient care professional with additional responsibility as a team leader of the Student Health Center. The Registered Nurse - Charge oversees staffing, patient care quality, and development of Nursing Standing Orders. Advancement to this position requires compliance with the stated qualifications, State laws for licensing, and a demonstrated ability to integrate health education, diagnostic, record management, and urgent care services. The Registered Nurse is qualified to observe and document patterns in communicable disease and public health issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Serves as a clinic team leader by setting schedules based on available staff, oversight to nursing case management, point of care diagnostics, and lead referral resource. Develops Nursing Standing Orders in compliance with California Nursing Practice requirements, participates in clinic policy and procedure development, and facilitates internal office routines that protect patient privacy and complies with mandated reporting requirements.     
* Identifies students with health problems that interfere with effective learning. Employs case finding, screening, interviewing, and observation techniques as well as analysis of health records to assess student health status. Refers students with particular needs to medical and/or mental health professionals and/or community resources.     
* Coordinates health services including the medication dispensing program, phlebotomy, laboratory, and public health surveillance and services programs.     
* Compiles health and demographic information from students, noting individual health history and population health trends including social, emotional, and environmental aspects.      
* Provides urgent nursing care for ill and injured students Refers patients to health care providers and community resources as appropriate.     
* Provides initial mental health assessment, intake, crisis screening and intervention. Collaborates with behavioral health providers to manage care, make referrals, and stabilize patients.     
* Provides registered nursing care services as mandated by law and current standing orders from the Doctor on site.     
* Evaluates and documents the progress of patient care plans and therapeutic programs, and makes modifications within scope of practice. Collaborates with mental health teams to address patient care and service delivery.     
* Conducts physical examinations in support of campus programs and at student request if within the scope of college health practice.     
* Participates in implementing programs directed at control of communicable diseases at the campuses. Conducts health education and outreach.     
* Confers with, participates and collaborates with health care providers and public health agencies in formulating appropriate campus health policies and resolution of student and community health issues.     
* Facilitates student access to school, and community health and support services.     
* Develops resources as appropriate to meet student needs.     
* Maintains professional competence by participating in required in-service education and health education programs designed to maintain healthcare credentials.     
* Provides health education and counseling to students.      
* Participates with other health care professionals, campus and community resources to develop emergency and individualized care plans, and facilitating referrals as appropriate.     
* Follows up to monitor patient progress related to short-term episodic care only.     
* Ensures that health records are maintained up-to-date. Documents all patient encounters. (chart notes only)     
* Observes HIPAA confidentiality requirements in all patient communication.     
* Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
