Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks a Director of Procurement Services to direct and oversee the purchasing and accounts payable functions for the College. The Director will provide leadership to the procurement services team to foster ownership, a bias for action, shared decision-making, information sharing, and a strong customer orientation. The Director is responsible for the preparation, negotiation, review, and award of contracts, bid and/or requests for proposals. The Director will leverage all available procurement tools to prioritize and balance competitiveness of bids with quality of service. The Director is responsible for developing, recommending, and implementing policies and procedures for maintaining proper internal controls in the procure to pay function. The Director must work fluidly with, and build rapport within, all areas of the College. The Director will need to closely monitor relationships with vendors to assure services rendered are aligned with payments and contract parameters. The selected candidate will demonstrate the knowledge and skill to engage across a wide variety of individual differences and identities through meaningful interactions characterized by respect, mutual understanding and reciprocity.

The institution is recognized for its renowned faculty of artists and designers, the breadth of its specialized facilities, and the intensity of its studio-based approach to learning – an approach where critical thinking informs the making of works by hand. Approximately 2,540 students (from around the world) study at RISD, pursuing full-time bachelor’s or master’s degree programs in 19 fine arts, architecture or design majors, complemented by essential study in liberal arts. The RISD Museum, with the third largest college or university museum in the country, is an integral part of the institution and a resource for the College and the larger community. RISD’s mission incorporates artistic and scholarly achievement with social impact, and has played a vital role in preparing students for leadership roles in all sectors, as demonstrated through the outstanding and varied accomplishments of its 27,000 alumni/ae.

Job Qualifications Required

  • BS/BA degree required, with MBA (or related degree) preferred.
  • Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in purchasing/procurement/ payables; at least three of those years should have been in a management/leadership capacity.
  • Excellent documented track record of procurement and payables management of performance improvement – with emphasis on cost and service.
  • Proven ability to create and implement effective procurement, contract and payables policies, processes, procedures and systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-directed with strong ability to motivate others.
  • Strong exposure to best practices in procurement and accounts payable – and the ability to transfer that knowledge throughout RISD.
  • Broad business acumen to interact with leadership at a very senior level is critical – as is a team orientation. The successful candidate will promote the procurement initiative through persuasive – rather than dictatorial – means.
  • Demonstrated experience in leveraging technology to improve internal processes and strategic sourcing.
  • Demonstrated experience in contract management and review, including the ability to: understand the scope of a proposed relationship; review, edit, and suggest contract language; and, spot and resolve specific issues to ensure contracts are complete and accurate.
  • Proven ability to interact with members of a community representing diverse backgrounds and interests, including faculty, staff, and outside consultants.
