Financial Aid Counselor
Laguna College of Art + Design, is seeking a full-time experienced Financial Aid Counselor. The College is located in an internationally recognized arts colony in Laguna Beach, California and offers a diversity of majors in Animation, Graphic Design and Digital Media, Fine Art, Game Art, Illustration, Creative Writing and Entertainment Design.

Position Summary:

The Financial Aid Counselor Performs functions under the general supervision of the Financial Aid Director. The counselor will primarily be responsible for the administration of the undergraduate financial aid programs. 2-3 years of financial aid program experience and familiarity with relevant federal and state program regulations and a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent is preferred.

As a representative of Laguna College of Art + Design, this position is responsible for maintaining a high level of knowledge regarding Financial Aid programs and facilitates a high quality of customer service that attracts, retains, and enrolls academically qualified, culturally diverse, and socially conscious populations of students in effort to meet both enrollment and retention goals. This candidate is well-rounded and thrives in a fast paced atmosphere. The Financial Aid Counselor will actively work with the Admissions team, Registrar, and faculty to ensure student success. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interprets and applies state and federal regulations including guidelines to Title IV programs
  • Analyzes financial data, family circumstances, and educational goals and apply knowledge of federal, state, and outside agency laws, regulations, and policies to determine student’s eligibility for various types of aid.
  • Coordinates the processing of communication to students, including but not limited to: award notification, verification, C codes, loan limits, default status, Selective Service, SAP, etc.
  • Processes received forms/documents including verifications
  • Assists in daily Department of Education communications and processing of daily reports including but not limited to: Pell and Direct Loan origination/disbursements and ISIR corrections/processing
  • Assists in compilation of data and statistics for reporting purposes
  • Analyzes reports to resolve eligibility problems
  • Reconciles student data from multiple sources and identifies and resolves mismatches and errors
  • Certifies private and outside loan eligibility
  • Counsels students and parents regarding student financial aid matters from enrollment/application to graduation/post-graduation
  • Administers Federal Work Study program
  • Coordinates evaluation of academic progress for all financial aid recipients
  • Assists in the supervision of student workers in the Financial Aid Office
  • Participates in campus and community outreach activities
  • Coordinates and develops special programs and participates in speaking engagements
  • Suggests enhancements and changes to policies and/or procedures
  • Keeps up to date with changes in private, state and federal financial aid programs
  • Works with the Director to manage the Cal Grant program eligibility, disbursements and reconciliation
  • Performs budget adjustments (Professional Judgments), award origination, and verification to disbursing funds and maintaining student records
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality, collegial and diplomatic behavior at work, and work performance to the satisfaction of management are essential functions of this position

Position Requirements, Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent preferred
  • 2-3 years of progressive experience in financial aid
  • Broad, up to date knowledge and experience in state and federal Title IV compliance
  • Familiarity with all areas of financial aid: determining eligibility, processing aid, counseling families/ students, and reconciling funds
  • Self-motivated to manage daily operations and completion of longer term departmental projects
  • Attention to detail, strong analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and due date pressures utilizing strong planning, organization and time management skills while generating a high level of quality work product
  • Working knowledge of COD, NSLDS, FAA online, WebGrants, and EdConnect (PowerFaids a plus)
  • Ability to learn quickly, provide excellent customer service, active listening and interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have excellent attendance and punctuality
  • Experience in the Education industry required

Physical Essential Functions
Siting, keyboarding, may lift up to 20 lbs. without assistance, grasping, pulling, pushing, reaching, and moving from one place to another.  This position takes place indoors in an office environment sitting at a desk and working in front of a computer. Occasional bending, stooping and squatting.
