Overview

The Grafton campus is home to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and the Tufts New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory. Tufts Grafton Health Services serves the in-person health needs of over 500 professional students on Tufts’ Grafton Health Science Campus and provides work-related medical services to university faculty, staff, and post-doctoral students to prevent and minimize health risks. Grafton Health Services provides
occupational health services and certain episodic ambulatory care services to faculty, staff, and students using a unique blended model that responds to the needs of the entire Tufts Grafton community. The Service contributes to the university's educational mission through various activities devoted to prevention, intervention, and consultation related to health, mental health, and wellness needs.

The Health Service at Grafton is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and culturally informed environment. We are a multicultural team with an ongoing focus on deepening our understanding of the intersectional identities of all members of our community.
Our values are confidentiality, respect for diversity, promotion of wellness, and continuous professional growth. Nurse practitioners (NPs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to meet the medical needs of students, faculty, and staff, including evaluation and treatment of work-related injuries, routine primary care services, disease prevention, and health promotion.

The nurse practitioner (NP) provides (1) routine ambulatory medical care for veterinary medicine doctoral students and other graduate-level students and (2) occupational health services for faculty and staff on Tufts University’s Grafton campus, including work-related medical services such as health screens, vaccinations, work-related injury evaluations and treatment, case management, medical surveillance monitoring, and some episodic care.

What You'll Do

For students: medical services include, but are not limited to, oversight and provision of necessary vaccinations, if required, and basic episodic primary care by appointment and walk-in. The NP sees and treats common acute illnesses and injuries and provides ongoing follow-up of common chronic illnesses in this age group (e.g., asthma, allergies, migraines, gastrointestinal conditions, eating disorders, and musculoskeletal complaints). The NP will
provide reproductive and sexual healthcare for persons of all genders and will make referrals to specialists and emergency services when clinically indicated. Because of the veterinary focus of academic programs at Grafton, the NP will also assess, evaluate, treat, and refer students with zoonotic infections, other relevant infectious diseases, and animal-related injuries. The Health Service will offer depression screening to all students; the NP
must be comfortable in talking with students about mental and sexual health. The NP will provide medical services to students by appointment and for walk-ins.

For faculty and staff: medical services include triage and treatment of work-related injuries, making referrals to specialists, case management of injuries, reviewing immunization records and updating vaccinations and titers, the provision of medical clearance for those in medical surveillance programs (e.g., respiratory protection program), workplace exposure evaluations and treatment, prescription of appropriate medications, health assessments and some basic episodic care services including diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment or referral of zoonotic infections and other relevant infectious diseases. The NP will provide medical care by appointment and for walk-ins.

The NP will provide clinical follow-up to patients as needed and communicate with managers, school leadership, human resources, risk management, and environmental health and safety while respecting the confidentiality of patient’s personal health information.
