The Network Services group designs, installs, and operates the campus data network, Wi-Fi and security video service, and related systems. We provide connectivity throughout campus, including within the Data Center, plus off-campus locations of University departments. We also manage the interconnection between the campus and regional and national research networks as well as connectivity to the public Internet. The network services group collaborates with other groups within the Berkeley IT organization to provide end user connectivity and network services, including Wi-Fi and wired network connections.

Position Overview:

Involves operation of the campus's data networks, Wi-Fi, remote access, and supporting infrastructure. Plans, designs, develops, installs and maintains data network systems for the campus or a sub-unit.

The Senior Network Engineer is a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.

They use advanced professional IT concepts and campus objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Regularly works on highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

Responsibilities

  • Take a lead role in mid-sized campus projects, working with cross-functional groups to identify needs, recommend direction and technologies, design solutions including cost analysis, product comparisons, and hands-on implementation.
  • Configure, install, manage switches, routers, load balancers, firewalls, and other network related infrastructure and support services
  • Escalation point responsible for network issue determination and resolution.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues in network systems software and distribution and access electronics.
  • Work directly with vendor / manufacturer technical support to isolate and resolve hardware and software issues.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for incident response.
  • Perform hands-on and on-site work for projects and incident response as needed.
  • Mentor less experienced team members.
  • Plan and build solutions to automate new builds, operational tasks, monitor, and report on network integrity/performance.
  • Author, audit, and maintain complete technical documentation.
  • Perform consulting to the campus community to help identify and provide solutions to areas of need.
  • Communicate with technical and non-technical staff, facility, students, and consultants.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, represent the team and institution in discipline related organizations and communities of practice.


Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of professional communications and network systems in the completion of diverse assignments.
  • Advanced knowledge of the practices and techniques of the data field, and the ability to determine a course of action based on guidelines.
  • Has highly developed problem-solving skills to resolve issues using defined parameters and technical expertise.
  • Clearly understands the communications and network needs of the organization and has skills needed to address those needs.
  • In-depth, advanced understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software, and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
  • Ability to analyze highly complex communication hardware and software systems for maintaining a real-time resource that impacts campus network users.
  • Understanding and experience with network diagnostic, monitoring and management systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the advancement of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with:
    • MPLS / vxLAN or similar technologies.
    • Client based remote access service (VPN).
    • Site-to-site VPN.
    • Experience with managed Wi-Fi deployments.
    • Experience with firewall implementations.
    • Python programming experience.
    • Scripting network automation experience.
    • SLB/GSLB experience.
    • Network orchestration experience
    • Products from Palo Alto Networks, Juniper, Cisco, A10, Infoblox, and/or Aruba Networks.
    • Un*x/Linux Systems Administration experience


Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $105,500.00 - $150,000.00.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This position is eligible for flexible or hybrid remote work based on candidate availability and business needs.
