At RISD the exploration of both studio arts and liberal arts makes for a powerful experience. In fact, RISD stands out among art schools for its emphasis on liberal arts study, led by doctorate-level faculty in archaeology, anthropology, biology, cognitive science, creative writing, literature, history, art history, performance studies, philosophy, psychology, religion, sociology and more.

The mission of the Liberal Arts division is threefold: to provide a strong general education, to offer possibilities for focused study, and to foster opportunities for deepening and enriching art and design practice. In Liberal Arts classes students learn to articulate ideas with independence and confidence; think creatively, critically and analytically; and develop a lifelong curiosity about the world.

The Division Coordinator project manages all department course tables, consisting of approximately 300-course listings, including the processing of course proposals, revisions, and faculty contracts, as requested by department heads and program coordinators. Schedules all courses and sections, coordinates first-year program with Experimental and Foundation Studies, and ensure registration of all first-year, transfer, and concentration students. Maintains all faculty contracts and records. Conduct curriculum research and provide analysis of enrollment, space, schedules, comparative programs, etc., as requested by Dean. Works with department heads to create annual assessment reports regarding first-year program and electives. Leads coordination and administrative support of new academic programs, special curriculum and pedagogy projects, and sponsored projects. Maintains close communication with faculty and other administrative offices across the campus and within the division to continually improve services and meet the needs of the full breadth of students on campus. Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates, the Academic Programs Assistant.
