Departmental Overview

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM) is a multidisciplinary program that recognizes the urgency and significance of our current environmental challenges, and the enormous opportunities that will lead to transformative change.

Position Summary

This position is supporting the grant "Mountain Community Affordable Workforce Housing with Mass Timber Components". This project will develop affordable workforce housing designs that will fit the needs of mountain community workforces. Designs will include mass timber elements and they will be designed to be permitted in the areas for which they are intended.

As part of the grant, the employee will be expected to learn under supervision about affordable housing in California, mass timber construction made from local materials. The knowledge gathered, coupled with available data will be combined in a computational model for data analysis and representation to gain insight from available data.

Responsibilities

• Under direct supervision, creates or utilizes basic software tools to analyze or interpret research data of limited scope and complexity.
• Build an interactive data-driven map of housing stock and affordability in California using available online housing data, with a focus on key mountain communities.
• Under direct supervision or collaboration with peers, utilizes basic algorithms, techniques, AI and statistical methodologies to conduct predictive analytics, or generate insights.
• Based on the interactive map, model and predict best housing solutions for mountain communities, such as square footage, floor plan and designs.
• Assists with data science research to contribute to proposals for other researchers and Principal Investigator (PI) s from the organization.
• This includes the creation and implementation of existing research by other researchers for the purpose of the grant on housing affordability.
• Creates, maintains, documents and utilizes computer programs of limited algorithmic complexity and scale, such as parametric design in Rhino3D Grasshopper environment.
• Learn about topics related to the grant objectives such as mass timber construction, forestry, and affordable housing as it relates to California.

Required Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of HPC/data science/CI.
• Basic knowledge of applications programming and web development, database and data systems, statistical methods and tools, and modern biology and applicable field of research.
• Basic knowledge of one of the following: Scalable systems, distributed systems, or systems performance.
• Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner, especially to a non-technical audience.
• Ability to effectively manage time and see assigned parts of projects through to completion on deadline.
• Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
• Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization, and to iteratively improve data science methodologies working with biomedical domain experts.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer/Computational/Data Science, or Domain Sciences with computer/computational/data specialization applied to Architectural Design and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 12-month, 80% (32 hours/week), contract appointment, eligible for UC benefits with the possibility of extension with continued funding. This is a non-exempt, hourly paid position.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $34.77 - $40.00.
