Departmental Overview

The Department of Civil and Environmental engineering (CEE) is a complex academic department within the College of Engineering. The Department is composed of 7 graduate programs: Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Materials; Environmental Engineering; Transportation Engineering; Engineering and Project Management; Geosystems; Systems Engineering; and Energy, Civil Infrastructure and Climate.

In 2023, CEE was ranked first in the nation for both its undergraduate and graduate programs. The Department consists of 45 faculty, 400 graduate and 400 undergraduate students, and 21 staff plus numerous emeriti, lecturers, and visiting scholars.

This position will serve as the primary support to the experimental facilities of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, faculty and student research projects, service to industry projects and Students' Shop of the department band provide as needed assistance to the electronic shop and concrete lab. Students' Shop is primarily oriented toward servicing students' needs and consists of welding, machining, and fabrication areas. The incumbent utilizes equipment in these areas to instruct the students. Provides technical support for new and existing instructional, research, and service to industry apparatus. Also performs functional design and assembly of new experimental setups. Provide hands-on training to students on the safe and proper use of equipment within the CEE's experimental facilities and Students' Shop. Design, build, maintain, and assess the functionality of experiments within the CEE's experimental facilities and Students' Shop. Provide support for both undergraduate and graduate students engaged in welding activities, making machined parts and assemblies for class-assigned projects, student group projects, and to support research projects. Some minor fabrication support is required for service to industry projects. Follows all safety procedures required by the university, department, Cal OSHA, and EH&S procedures and policies.

This is a 100% FTE, limited term appointment covering a leave of absence and will not convert to a career appointment if it exceeds 1,000 hours in a rolling 12-month period.

Responsibilities

75% Under supervision, supports CEE's Experimental Facilities

• Provide technical support to instructional activities, research and service to industry projects.
• Perform functional design, fabrication, modification, setup, demolition, and technical support of new and existing instructional or research apparatus from sketches, schematic drawings, blueprints, and oral instructions.
• Perform testing of equipment, and verification of equipment's functionality.
• Maintain, troubleshoot problems, and repair equipment in CEE's experimental facilities, Students' Shop, and pump room hydraulics.
• Assist in the research for new laboratory equipment needed, including specifications, cost, and availability.
• Answer questions, provide accurate technical information and provide technical trouble-shooting during the instructional or research experiments within the course laboratory components.

15% Welding and Machining in Students' Shop

• Weld a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials.
• Work with faculty, staff, and students in the design and fabrication of complex class and research projects.
• Operate machine tools and welding machines found in the shop, including mills, lathes, grinders, MIG and TIG welding, cutting torch, and plasma cutter.
• Instruct students on proper usage of welding and power tools.

5% Electronic Shop and Concrete Lab Support

• From hardware point of view, assist Electronic Shop in developing and maintaining schematics and documentation of laboratory systems and experimental setups.
• Provide technical support of fabrication, installation, and testing for classes conducted in Concrete Lab.

5% Other Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair shop and laboratory machinery and equipment as necessary.
• Act as information resource on safety matters and shop practices and welding principles.
• Perform office and laboratory maintenance including moving of offices, labs, and equipment.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Knowledge of machine tool technology, metal fabrication, and metal joining processes.
• One to two years of journey-level metal fabrication, welding skills to facilitate fabrication of laboratory apparatus. Advanced mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills to diagnose malfunctioning equipment and mechanical systems.
• Ability to operate overhead crane safely. Ability to unload materials from trucks by the safe rigging of various shapes, sizes, and weights. Ability to operate forklift with a sensitive touch. Ability to lift up to 70 pounds and work at heights.
• Excellent attention to detail. Ability to be flexible and to show initiative. Ability to communicate effectively, diplomatically, and professionally. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Strong record of punctuality and reliable attendance.

Preferred Qualifications

• A.A. degree, Apprentice Certificate of Completion or equivalent experience/training.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $30.25 (Step 1) to $31.64 (Step 2) hourly. This is a 100% FTE, limited term appointment that is FLSA Non-exempt and paid biweekly.
