Overview

The Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) provides facilities, services, and information to facilitate effective research using laboratory animals at Tufts University and Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston and Tufts University in Medford. DLAM is also obligated to insure that animal care procedures and animal experimentation comply with federal, state, and local regulations. The management and operation of the animal care activities of all sites are integral to the animal care and use program. All centralized facilities are located within a 2-block radius, either in Boston or Medford and house in excess of 50,000 animals daily.


What You'll Do

The Supervisor will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of DLAM's Rodent Breeding Service. Supervises and coordinates the daily activities of the Animal Care Technologists within the Rodent Breeding Services section of DLAM. These activities may include delegating work assignments, assisting with scheduling and ensuring completion of duties. The Supervisor will assist in hiring, performance evaluations and disciplinary actions of the Animal Care Technologists. Responsible for adequate communication between the Rodent Breeding Service, DLAM and the Investigative staff. The supervisor will assist, prepare and schedule training sessions for Animal Health Services, DLAM and Investigative Staff which may include AALAS certifications and continuing education programs.   

 

Supervision and Training:

  • Supervise Animal Care Technologists in the RBS
  • Make work schedules, evaluate and adjust work assignments    
  • Hiring, performance evaluation, disciplinary action
  • Directly supervise 2-3 Animal Care Technologists  
  • Problem solving
  • Assist in obtaining AALAS certifications and meeting continuing education requirements
  • Assist in training and developing of procedures for training sessions and equipment

Rodent Breeding and Animal Care:

  • Administer rodent breeding service programs and provide care to animals
  • Maintain RBS database and provide weekly reports to investigative staff
  • Ensure compliance with government regulations for animal housed at this institutions

Development and Implementation of Animal Health and Welfare Programs:

  • Under minimal supervision, provide oversight of RBS
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures for the RBS and DLAM, as assigned
  • Monitor the health and provide clinical care to laboratory animals housed  at Tufts University (Boston and Medford) and Tufts Medical Center

Administration:


• Monitoring budget and spending with in the Rodent Breeding Service section of DLAM
• Provide cousel and problem solving to Investigative staff
• Ensure the maintenance of complete and accurate records of compliance reviews and correspondence with DLAM and Investigative staff


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of related experience
  • Bachelors Degree in Veterinary Sciences, Veterinary Technology, Animal Health Science, or related field. 
  • Special licenses required: LATG and CVT (both preferred)
  • AALAS certification of Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level and/or demonstrated equivalent experience is required. If not LATG certified, employee must complete the LATG certification within 1 year of employment.
  • Required computer/technical skills:
    • Microsoft office proficiency & good computer skills.
    • Knowledge and expertise in breeding rodents including genetic mutants.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Veterinary Technician License (e.g., CVT) in at least one state desirable.

 

Pay Range

Minimum $29.40, Midpoint $35.00, Maximum $40.60
 

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
