Departmental Overview

The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus affiliated community members. In addition to the 30 sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of recreational activities and state of the art equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes and provides guidance and instruction to participants including program managers, supervisors, and coordinators on program execution best practices, procedures, methods, and techniques that align with the department and Student Affairs strategic initiatives. This may include items related to Finance, Human Resources, Payroll, Public Relations, Purchasing, Risk and Safety, or other auxiliary functions.
  • Enforces program policies and procedures.
  • Ensures alignment with and implementation of core program operation requirements including human resources and payroll practices.
  • Serves as department liaison with central campus service providers including Human Resources to ensure workshop and participant materials are accurate.
  • Designs, plans, organizes and conducts complex workshops and programs that sets direction, execution, and program planning strategies for rec program managers, supervisors, and coordinators, individually or in groups.
  • Keeps current on methods of instruction, techniques and skills through peer review programs.
  • Participates in required training related to Student Affairs initiatives and auxiliary functions.
  • Actively engages in professional development activities appropriate for an experienced professional in their field of expertise.
  • Provides coordination to the Executive Director and Leadership team.
  • Assists Leadership Team in smooth office operations and provide administrative support.
  • Serves as back-up department scheduler.
  • Manages paper files, contact databases, and prepare documents.
  • Maintains files, records and prepares reports as necessary on all matters, including non- routine matters.
  • Maintains evaluation and tracking records to ensure compliance with campus required policies and procedures.
  • Reports safety issues to appropriate personnel, recommends improvements, and follows through to ensure that safety issues are addressed.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Client service focused, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills to resolve non-standard issues.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language.
  • Strong proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.
  • Thorough knowledge of and/or ability to learn campus policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of and/or ability to learn program activity and industry best practices.
  • Skills to develop original ideas and creatively problem-solve in a varied and challenging environment.
  • Service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization.
  • Ability to understand and relate to work provided in recreation program industry.


Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Red Cross CPR.
  • Standard First Aid Training Certification.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is 31.50 - 35.00.

  • This is a 12-month, 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), contract position that is eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension.
  • This position is non-exempt and bi-weekly.
